Okay all. Is there a teacher in the house? My fiance has an 11 year old that is in the 5th grade and is not doing so well in Math and Reading.
His reading scores are up considerably, but still needs some help with comprehension. We've obtained a reading list from the school to help him along with that, but I would also like to get a list a little above where he is at so that he can learn not just what is on his level but maybe excel a little.
He also has a problem with math word problems. He struggles with math in general but that is a definate problem area.
I would like to know if there are any resources on line where I can go and print out problems and such and have him do them. I dont want him doing them on the computer because right now he is easily distracted, but will eventually move him to working with online material. It seems to me that there used to be a site where you could go and create math test, word problem test, multiplication, addition, subtraction and so on, but I cant seem to find anything like that now. Anyone know of anything like that out there. Something I can go a create a worksheet then have him do it?
As for the reading, I just want something that is slightly above his reading level. Something that will be a little challenging but not discouraging. We already have a 5th grade level reading list that we are going through with him, but I want to put a slight challenge in there every now and then just to give him an idea of perhaps what he could be working on.
Ive always done well in Math and Science but Im no teacher in those areas. Im way to analyitical to offer any practical help. I can look at what he is studying and it makes sense to me, but Im not so good at conveying to him how he should go about getting to the solution. So if any of you have any suggestions or resources I can make use of, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ohh yeah, we have definately asked his teachers for assistance. He is in a very good school and has an outstanding teacher, very eager to help and has made herself very available to us even after school which I am extremely grateful for.
We have been having him read 20 minutes a day, and twice a day on the weekends which has helped his scores. He is absolutely awsome in spelling and is very strong there so we have used his success there as sort of a launching pad to drive him a little in his reading and math.
The school suggested that with the success of having him read 20 minutes a day that maybe we should try the same with the math, have him work on math 20 minutes a day. Which we thought was a good idea, but coming up with the problems, and such for him to do that work is not such an easy thing. Im planning on getting some math software to install on the PC so I can work from that angle but also wanted some online resources as well.
Funnyone I do appreciate the links you posted. That edhelper.com looks good, I havent check out the other one yet. If you or anyone else has any more suggestions or on line resources, post them up.

Math is my strong point. If there is anything in particular you need help with I can give you a hand. I think the first place to start with word problems is to disect it and turn it into a regular problem. There are always key words in the problem that give away what the operations should be...if he can learn those key words and pull them out, then he just needs to put the information together.
If I were you, I would find out what text book he is using. Publishers/authors usually have sites for their books with additional help. I think it would be better to work within the same material as he is using.
I hadnt thought about websites for the textbook manninej, thats a good idea. I'll have to look into that. It would be good to keep him on the same material if possible.
Math and Science have always been strong points for me, Im just not good at teaching how to do it. However you are correct about the word problems but it doesnt seem the school is giving him enough of them. So I was hoping for a site that had a large library of them that I could use to give him some practice.
I do appreciate your offer to help and I may take you up on that to get a different perspective.

I guess I'm the resident teacher. I teach special ed., & I'm certified to teach all academics. This year, I'm teaching math. I've got some pretty good web sites for materials, workbooks, worksheets, games, etc. Problem is, I'm home right now & they're at work. I'll send you some in the AM.

i honestly don't know many good websites for younger kids though. if you don't want him doing computer stuff, i'm sure you could find something at barnes&noble or your local big book store.
Thank you manninej, Mr. V and Rob. Im looking at everything you guys are suggesting. Hopefully we can get something of a routine down for his daily 20 minute math time each day.
Mr. V I would greatly appreciate anything you have. They are having them do the Study Island thing this year which is online, but they have yet to send home any notices that they have completed the pretests yet, and the school requested that we hold off letting them do that from home until they had done the pre-testing.
Again, I really appreciate everyones help.

I keep thinking of things. You might also want to check out Wal Mart or something like that for computer games. My daughter uses them and they have fun plus learn.
Hell, I even found this. Go to the bottom of the link and you can download a FREE copy. I don't know how old he is, but you could give it a shot.
OK! Here we go. I should woarn you that looking through this stuff is a lot like looking at wallpaper samples at a large paint store. There are so many choices, that you quickly forget what you've seen.
On some of these you may have to search for the subject & age/grade level, but you'll quickly get the idea. Most of these pages have ferr downloadable worksheets, games, word problems, ruberics, etc.
Good luck. I hope this helps you. If you need more info, let me know.

Manninej, thank you. I am going to try and get him some software to work on the PC with, but I want him to first learn to do it by hand. He has a problem staying focused, and while I would expect that to some degree, his tends to be a bit more than average. So while I want him to do some of the work on the PC, I want him to get used to focusing on the work first.
Mr. V, thank you as well. All those links are good, but the lessonplanspage.com was just about exactly what I was looking for. You can print out pre-made worksheets or create your own and they have the answer keys and so forth. Very Nice! Thank you all for your help and advice and if there is any more that you would like to put forward, by all means do so.
