Ive been following Ivan since it first reached hurricane strength. I thought it was going to get severely weakened along the northern coast of South America, and while it did weaken due to shear most likely, it is back and stronger than ever. The satellite images are very impressive. Very tight and very well defined eye. Unfortunately the projected path for it is putting it in line with Florida.
It has reached sustained winds of 160 mph. Putting it on par with Hurricane Andrew which also was a Cat. 5 hurricane. It has pressure reading of 921 mb which is extremely low and is an indication of how strong the storm is. I bet the storm surge is high wherever it makes landfall at if it maintains its intensity.
I listened to a report last night that said in Grenada only 1 in 10 houses remained intact. So hopefully everyone will keep an eye on this storm. I dont think I can recall a hurricane ever reaching 200+ mph winds, but this one seems to bent on reaching that level. It went to a Cat. 5 strength in 24hrs which is unheard of, then was reduced to a Cat. 1 by shear off South America and survived that and is now back to a very strong Cat. 5.
Everyone that is in the projected path of this thing, keep an ear on the weather updates, you dont want to be caught off guard by such a storm as this.

I'm a storm geek, not to the extent that Daniel is, but I love a good storm...hate the damage and death, but they are fascinating!
Dan, my Dan, has his best freind who lives with his g/f in Jamaica. I don't know what's going on there with them. I hope they can get out. He has a very large sailboat too.

Storms RULE!!!!! But I do agree with ya, I wish we could avoid all the loss of life and damage. We need to create a storm zone where nothing but hurricanes, tornadoes and super cells can play.

The current projected path takes it through the Keys (sorry guys) but then into the central southern tip of Florida - the good news is that whole area is Everglades National Park where there is basically nothing but miles and miles of everglades and swamp. There are few if any real towns down there, but it's also so flat and wet that I wonder how much (or how little) it will take out of the hurricane as it passes over. Moving north some, you come to Everglades City, Immokalee, and where my inlaws live, LaBelle. If I lived anywhere near those places, I'd be getting on a plane to visit family in either Wisconsin or Canada.
Yeah, storms rule if you have a gas powered generator. If not then prepare to sweat, not sleep, be bored, have 90 degree water to drink and soup heated on the grill for breakfast, and inhale tons of soot from your candles.
