I was watching a re-run of Rides on TLC this evening. They were doing an Expedition for Christopher Titus, and they painted a carbon fiber strip down the side and also on a shacker hood they installed. It looked like they just laid down the black background and then just laid down some kind of masking tape that had the carbon fiber look cut out of it and painted the silver.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about or have you ever seen this somewhere. I would LOVE to get ahold of some of this tape to do some painting on some of my interior panels in a red carbon fiber look.
I saw that show too. I thought it looked pretty cool. I didn't like the vehicle, but the stripes looked great. I don't know what he put on it to get that effect. It looked almost like burlap.

I got to thinking about this and was doing a little research. I found a post in a Spoon Civic message board that said to lay down a gloss black background. Then place some fine mesh (screen door type stuff I'm assuming) and spray a gunmetal over it. After that dries remove the mesh and spray over the top with a smoke mix (black and white mix).
My question is how would you do this with red on black? The dash pieces that I want to paint are already matte to flat black plastic. Could I just get some fine mesh screen material and paint gloss red over that? Then maybe spray a high gloss clear over everything to pull the black out a little bit? How could I keep the paint from getting underneath the mesh? Spray glue maybe?
I'm kind of afraid that it's going to be more of a checker pattern that a carbon fiber effect, but I guess if it's a fine enough mesh you won't really notice it.
I did some practicing last night on a piece of plexiglass and it didn't really work out to well. The paint gets up under the mesh. I taped down the sides, but it didn't seem to help. I'm going to do some more experiementing today though.
