it's not particularly magic really, it's just an extremely hydrophobic polymer. It prefers to stay together rather than to interact with the strongly polar water molecules. It's akin to the similar concept of oil and water. They don't interact because one is polar, and the other is non-polar. Particularly useful in seperations chemistry.

This is only particularly interesting since it's a solid and a liquid.
