Well storm season is here FINALLY!!  Ive already been on one chase in Feb. and managed to get a couple good shots, but nothing really sensational.  However the SPC is showing slight and moderate risks for the OK area today and tomorrow.

Im charging up batteries, packing the car, getting ready to gas it up and Im gonna roll.  Daddy needs some new lightning pics.

I just this week upgraded the laptop with a faster processor, bigger hard drive and a internal CD burner.  I seriously considered buying XM's weather package that has data that rivals what the television meterologist use complete with storm tracking, lightning data and street level radar.

Im watching a storm cell right now that already is reaching 22k ft up in the atmosphere, has a 60% chance of shear and 100% chance of hail @ about .75" size and it looks like its getting stronger.  Yeeee hawww, time to go tango!

OMG you're one of those?!

I'd be pretty scared, but the pictures must be awesome...

Didn't they have a show "StormChasers" or something on TLC a while back? Sounds interesting, to say the least!

Thanks Rick for posting the link to the web site.

We have a TVS signature just south of Enid, OK. A TVS is a Tornadic Vortex Signature.  It means the storm is rotating but probably unconfirmed at this point if anything is on the ground.  I got one battery finishing up on charging for my camera and I'll be on the road to go intercept that cell.

Unfortunately I didnt get any last night.  The cells that were heading my way faded out and then the southern part of OK fired up pretty good.  However there is an upper level disturbance thats floating along the OK/KS border and its begining to fire up some more storms out west so tonight looks like it should be another good night for storms.  There is a tornado watch for central and eastern OK so we'll see how that pans out.  I wish it were about 10 degrees warmer.  There might be enough energy then to keep things interesting all day, but right now there isnt much going on.

Plus, daytime is a challenge in getting lightning strikes.  Ive done it before, but its not my favorite time to shoot.  Ive got some pretty powerful filters to allow longer exposures during the daytime but even with that you have to be well within a mile or so of the strikes to get them on film unless the cloud cover has darkened things up enough.  When you shoot lightning during the day, the brighter light often washes out all the branching and you just see the main strike channel which isnt all that dramatic to me.  I like those suckers that start at one end of the sky and stretch across to the other side or the big ones that hit right in front of you and just throw out all kinds of branches.

Ive got my Mini-Disc digital recorder ready to go to so Im hoping I can get some weather sounds on disc as well.  I want to get enough sound recordings together to create a CD.
