So there i was, sitting in the supply room at work, trying to find a suitable picture that would fit my tastes, and looking through the boards when i took note of the mana bar on everyones ID when it hit me.

"why not get a picture that has to do with THAT?"

so i did. And i got a picture of my most favorite creature of all being that has ever existed in any realm that can exist. The Avatar of Woe. The one creature that i will be putting on my ZX3 as well as my forearm.

Just looking for some feedback on what you guys think. I know i dont post alot, but i do read plenty.

Woe?  How sad.   Life has enough agony without constantly being reminded of it.

The Avatar of Woe is the one card out of the entire Magic: The Gathering series that i prefer above all else. The combinations that i tried coming up with when i first got this have really improved with the time that i have spent playing the game.

What reminded me of this was the whole mana deal. In Magic, mana is basically currency.

here is a link to a blown up image of the card.

Anyways, i just thought that there might be a possibility that some of you had the same thought about mana that i did.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw Mana on the TF boards...

Magic, oh god that used to be sooo big. My favorite card was Tim the Enchanter, or something like that... oh and Chubb-toad. Not because either was a good card, but the names were funny to me.

What is Mana? :)
Polynesian origin
The word originates in Polynesian religion, and its modern use is a result of the popularization of the concept by anthropology and, to a great extent, by certain varieties of fantasy fiction. In Polynesian culture (e.g., Hawaiian, Māori), mana is analogous to respect, but it combines elements of respect, authority, power, and prestige. To have mana is to have influence and authority. This property is not limited to persons—peoples, governments, places, and inanimate objects can possess mana. In Hawaiian, mana loa means great power or almighty.

[edit]
Norse mythology, and it is at least in part to this source that we owe its modern use. However, in Norse mythology, mana was restricted to the vital life-essence of all that was good; i.e., love, harmony, etc. It was believed to be the source tapped into to perform white magic.

[edit]
cultures, the power of magic; however, it was not the only principle, and others included the concept of sympathetic magic and seeking the intervention of a specific supernatural being, whether deity, saint, or deceased ancestor.

The magic of mana was embedded into all talismans and fetishes, whether devoted to ancient gods, Roman Catholic saint relics, the spirits of the ancestors, or the underlying element that makes up the universe and all life within it. The concept of mana has been used in various cultures to justify human sacrifices, as the lives or blood of sacrificial victims might contain supernatural powers whose offering would please a deity.

  • Also related are the philosophical concepts of:
    [edit]
manna", which (according to the Bible) is a mysterious substance provided miraculously by God to the Hebrews in the desert. Some modern critics believe this may have been an edible wafer or sap of a variety of cactus found in the Sinai peninsula. Christian use of the word "manna" in reference to this, according to some, is thus unrelated to the Polynesian concept of "mana" (although there are definite archetypal similarities). "Man hu", or "manna" in the Hebrew language is translated as "what is it", and is likely only a phonetical coincidence with mana.

New Zealand political parties Mana Motuhake and the Mana Maori Movement.

    [edit]
fantasy settings and games (in particular role-playing games), "mana" is a natural energy resource which is used or channeled by wizards to cast magic spells. This use of the term was coined by Larry Niven in his 1978 novella, The Magic Goes Away, which deals with mana as a limited natural resource, becoming depleted. The use of the word outside of anthropological circles may well derive from this. (See magic point for more on mana in games.)

In J. R. R. Tolkien's universe, mana is a Quenya word believed to mean "what is". [1] (http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/qlist.htm)

    "Back In the Day"

Growing up in San Antonio, Tx.

1.) I'm a native white boy from there (nothing racial meant there) both cultures mixed and existed peacefully. Cool city!

2.) My cartoons were Popeye and Merry Melodies.

3.) In my High School days I paid  15-25 cents for gas, cheapest was 13 cents. There were no radial tires and you were real lucky to get 10,000 miles off a set and your car would need a tune up constantly. My first nice car '63 Olds F-85 cost $300. Thanks Mom and Dad, I miss you!

wow, rick. haha!  you have got far too much time on your hands. :clap

    Interesting stuff though.

I never personally got into the whole D&D and Magic thing, but I am a very strong fan and follower of Vampyres and other types of strong, immortals.

I also had to make a comment about woe - Mr. V - I agree, the world is very negative and we have enough misery....hell, I complain about it all the time, but sometimes, having that imaginary image or thought helps in a situation that needs strength to make it through.
I know I don't make much sense, but I've been through a lot of pain due to illness since I was 10 years old and sometimes the misery fueled me to make it through.  Seems backwards, but it worked to piss me off and fight not to let it take over my life.

ps - my favorite holiday is Halloween!

  • Maná, a famous 1990s Mexican music group; Also see Maná (musical group). style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #f8f8f8"

As in-depth as this topic seems to have gone, it seems to me that the mana used here is taken from the original use of respect, but still, these two topics stick out like a sore thumb to me, and for good reasons too.

Number one would have to be the fact that i would not expect to see Malice Mizer or Moi Dix Mois ever on these boards, because i didnt even bother to think of Mana as a relation to the topic, and yes, Mana is in fact known as "The Queen of Visual Kei" or in lamens terms, queen of visual rock, a hot new sensation that has taken japan by storm, and is slowly making its way over to the states (not to mention, its been my favorite genre of music for the past 3 1/2 years), but, Mana -though looks like a female- is actually a male who is the basis on the imported and translated Gothic Lolita, a magazine dedicated to the extreme gothic look. (I have more info on him, but its rather long, detailed, and would just feels like rambling. But if there are any other questions about J-Rock, or visual kei, this would be my strongest topic.)

Now, Maná is not pronounced the same way, its my friends favorite band, and there is a heavy accent on the second A, trust me, she reemed my ass over the mispronunciation, and apparently they are a really good band, though i have only heard a couple of their songs, its still not my thing, but it's okay.

    And thats my two cents.

    :drink
