Focus ST is agile, fast, powerful, but still practical for everyday driving
Fast and practical, the Ford Focus ST offers a no-compromise package for the performance car driver. Ford TeamRS, the company's racing and performance arm, has developed a car that is ideal for the performance motorist, while offering that welcome dash of refinement too.
With the introduction of the Fiesta ST in 2004, Ford TeamRS began to redefine Ford's performance models. The exciting new Focus ST , which will be introduced this Autumn, is a significant evolution of Ford's ST brand, delivering an addictive personality combined with high performance. It is the most powerful Ford Focus road car to date.
Power for performance
A potent turbocharged Duratec ST, 2.5 litre, 5-cylinder engine delivers an impressive 225PS. Equipped with a slick-operating six-speed manual gearbox and capable of a top speed in excess of 240 km/h (around 150mph), it needs only 6.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (6.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph). With target performance data like this, the Focus ST places itself firmly in the league of high performance sports cars.
Jost Capito, Director Ford TeamRS, believes that the Focus ST is the purest expression yet of the ST, Sport Technologies, Ford performance brand.
He said: "We have spared no effort in making this the most exciting Ford Focus road car yet. It is a perfect car for drivers who love the performance motoring experience, but do not want to sacrifice high standards of refinement, comfort and practicality."
The car looks the part, taking the clean, dynamic lines of the new Focus and moving them a stage further. The ST states its intentions clearly on low-profile 225/40 R18 tyres mounted on 18x8-inch cast aluminium wheels. Inside and out, Focus ST is a well-crafted, refined performer – a highly capable sports car for everyday driving.
Focus ST Chassis
The already outstanding Focus chassis, which offers class-leading handling and roadholding, has been modified and stiffened for the ST. Additional stiffness at the front end has been achieved by adding an extra cross-member across the bulkhead between the MacPherson struts.
The ST’s handling set-up has been tailored to reward the enthusiast driver and in the same time allow refined driving. For the ST the front springs have also been considerably stiffened by 30% and the dampers have been recalibrated. The rear springs also have been stiffened by 30% and the anti-roll bar increased by 5%, all this to serve the Focus ST and give the car impressive grip and extraordinary road holding. The lowering of the chassis by 25mm adds to the great driving experience.
The brakes have been upgraded to match the performance of ST, developing the already impressive system employed on other Focus models. The 320mm x 28 mm front ventilated discs have been fitted with large calipers and pads to provide an even better initial bite as befits the Focus ST 's status as a performance car.
Safety features include a rigid passenger cell, footwell protection, collapsible steering column and pedals and side impact protection door beams. Among the passive safety systems are driver and passenger front and side airbags, pyrotechnic belt pre-tensioners and neck injury protection system on front seats.
Developing the Focus ST look
The Focus ST signals its performance credentials with detailed design cues that echo Ford’s World Rally Championship contenders.
The visual weight of the front bumper has been emphasised to give the Focus ST a lowered look incorporating an aggressive inverted-trapezoid lower grille. Flanking the top of the lower grille, fog lamp openings are trimmed in brushed aluminium.
At the rear, reversing and rear fog lamp features are given similar design treatment, while the lower bumper has been sculpted to create the appearance of a sportscar-like aerodynamic venturi from which the chrome-tipped dual sport exhausts emerge.
Focus ST interior
Focus ST’s unique additional instrument pod, incorporated on the upper instrument panel, creates an immediate visual impact. Turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure are displayed by these instruments and provide the enthusiastic driver with useful data.
Focus ST’s black headliner and A-pillars give the interior a purposeful, cockpit feel. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has an increased rim section with bold thumb grips and three brushed aluminium-finished spokes. Stylish Recaro sport driver and passenger seats provide optimal lateral support during spirited driving.
These figure hugging seats can carry, if the customer desires, inserts matching the exterior colour of the car; this no-cost option is available on selected colours in the Focus ST range including Performance Blue and the eye catching Electric Orange. Full leather trim and a sculpted rear bench seat are also available as options.
