This is so frustrating.... I know, there's worse things that folks have to deal with... anyhow. I just purchased a laptop & would like to remove AOL 9.0.
Add/Remove Programs lists the program but when I attempt to remove it, I get a message that it's not installed. I even went so far as to register as a user for AOL thinking maybe I would be able to remove it aftwards but ...nope.
I've heard there's some freeware that's designed to remove the program (aka aol-virus) but I can't seem to find anything.
I say install it and than try to remove it. It sounds as if someone might have deleted the AOL folder(or part of it) and not use the add/remove function. When that happens all the related files and links are still in place for Windows to "think" its there but when it goes to use it or remove it it's not there and the computer becomes what it really is "a dumb machine"
Uninstalling may work, but from what I've understood even if you want it there and do all of those updates as they come along AOL doesn't overwrite the older files or delete the older ones, it just adds more and more to your drive.
I'd definitely try the install, uninstall and if that doesn't get rid of it all call AOL's tech line and have them tell you how to do it.

chelly - That's the problem.... It can't be uninstalled because XP thinks it's not installed. Unless everyone is thinking I should install from CD then try the uninstall.

I would guess they mean try the CD, then uninstall.
I know I've acidentally gone deleting things then Add/Remove Programs won't let it delete, and keeps showing it. Even though there's Nothing left of the program, I didn't go through the steps of XP and so it's confused and throws it up on the Programs List.
But if you just bought the laptop, and it came with AOL, was it new? I'm not aware of any computer-makers who load AOL for you, but my knowledge is far from extensive. If they did do that and its new, then the deleted folders doesn't make much sense, so I would try calling AOL?
Instead of going to Control Panel (or wherever) and Add/Remove Programs, is there an AOL line under the Programs menu? A lot of my programs here, if you hover the mouse over them they have like a text "ReadMe" file, and a run, and an Uninstall. Maybe AOL has one of those?

I appreceiate all the replies. I've removed the AOL virus. I finally just deleted all files pertaining to AOL & ran a registery clean-up. Now I have an additional 67.8K of HD Space.
AOL sucks.... my 76 year old grandfather doesn't even have them anymore (LOL)
It always boggles my mind when I see people on AIM and there profile says "AOL members profiles cannot be seen" or whatever, it's like People still use them?!
in fairness... 67.8k is a very small amount of space. the files were obviosly deleted except for a few icons and registry keys.
good to be cleaned up and i fully support the deletion of AOL, but seriously 70k is probly only five or six sectors on the disk. on most hard drives now-a-days files can't be smaller than 12k. even if they are they'll take up 12k on disk because there can't be more than one file in a sector, and that's how big sectors are. (that number varies a little depending on the size of your drive)
...yea so i was a bit of a computer nerd in highschool, so what?
