I've had a spot on the outside of my left foot that's been bothering me since last April. It's a swollen sore spot that hurts when it's touched, or bumped, which, of course, is all the time when I'm wearing shoes. It's gotten progressively worse. Despite many visits to the podiatrist(s), nobody knew why.
Finally, I went to the hosp for a bone scan, which came back positive for osteomylitis, an infestion within the bone. I'm having surgery tomorrow AM to have a portion of the bone removed. I may lose a toe...maybe two. So, I'll be gimping around for awhile. Taking a couple of days off work, (that's the good part), but I'll likely come home tomorrow. It remains to be seen how ambulatory I'll be, but I plan on going back to work Mon. My biggest hope is that I'll be able to ride soon. I really miss it.

I'm sorry! That stinks. I hope you don't lose anything. At least not two. I don't like my little toes. The nails alway split and hurt and I've thought about cutting them off. But if you like yours I hope its alright.
Jeez Mr V, I'll keep ya in my thoughts. Hope all goes well for you with as little loss of limb and time as possible. Make sure they send oyu home with a bottle of "good stuff", bone surgery's never any joy. Although you're getting a break from school, I'm sure you'd rather have one where you can move around a little better!
Osteomyelitis is a NASTY thing, it's a good thing they caught yours when they did, despite how obnoxious this will be (regardless of outcome, it ain't fun). OM's one of those infections that easily jumps to blood and can cause all-out sepsis if not found out, evil stuff.
I got chronic OM in my left shin, they ended up having to excise about 4" and I was on crutches for a few years. It was horrible, but my case had gotten way more out of hand than it sounds like yours is. I'm sure your recovery will be far less disastrous, and much speedier. I'll hope for you anyways!
Interesting fact, OM isn't real common in industrialized societies... it can get rampant in 3rd world countries though, especially in the kiddos for some reason. I got that from my research, though I forget exactly why the considerable gap.
Thanks everybody. I'm home, and in bed. Didn't lose any toes, but I hurt like hell!!!! Got a prescription for Hydrocodone, (sp?). I'm supposed to take one every 4 hrs if needed. It barely touches the pain. Actually, it feels tolerable, not good, for 45-55 min after I take one. Three hours of real teeth gritting, forehead sweating, pain after that.
My best guess is that 5 years from now, I won't even remember this. BTW, I hope I'm making some sense. I'm still a bit groggy from the stuff the "gas passer" gave me this AM.

I always found sleep to work best as a pain killer. Of course if you're in pain it can be difficult to Get to sleep, so there's a problem there...
I think at least once they gave me Tylenol with codeine? No, it was the Vicodin! One of those knocked me out hardcore. One pill, 15 minutes later I was dead to the world for like 7 hours. I'm an olympic sleeper.
Hope you get a speedy recovery, first day of pain's always the worst, it should get better from here on out! (fingers crossed)
I'm really looking forward to riding to work again. It's been real cold, though. I'll ride if it's 20 or warmer, but it's been single digits & low teens for the past 3 weeks. So far, according to weather records, this has been the coldest Dec. on record in N. Ohio.
