i'm in the process of buying my car from the dealership since my lease ends on august 20th.  since it's technically used now, and i'm out of warranty (long story on that one), in order for me to get an extended warranty i have to get the car inspected by the dealership.  that shouldn't be a problem since the state inspection was in april and was done at the dealership.  BUT none of the paperwork can go through until the inspection is done since the warranty amount is being put on the loan... so hopefully by thursday i'll have it inspected and all the paperwork signed.  i can't wait!

oh yeah - i should also mention that the sales rep helping was really cool, not pushy at all about me trying to get another car, so that made me happy.

I don't know about that.  The Focus has not been the most reliable car.  For what it cost's I think it is worth it.  If the focus had the record of say a civic(gulp) an extended warrenty is not worth it but the track record is not the best.

Also Rob, congrats on owning the car, there is no better feeling than that.

No way man. warrenties are just to make you feel good. The reality is you are on your own. Ford sent me a million letters begging me to get their extended warrenty after mine ran out. hell, they even called me at home! After reading it over its obvious that it wont help you. After the deductable and the parts markup plus dealer exorbant fees, you lose. Most of the parts on the car I can fix myself. So going to the dealer and paying the deductable on an overpriced service costs me more than it would cost to do it myself or sometimes even to have a reputable shop do it. Then they get you with the diagnostic scam. They tell you they are gonna investigate the cause and if it isnt in your favor then you have to pay them the labor for the troubleshoot time. This is a phenomenon that doesnt occur under normal warrenty. 9/10 times it comes down to a wear item or a flat refusal. you end up getting a prorated price at best which is still a rip off. Its a timeless scam. give someone a meaningless warentee, pro-rate it and watch them come back to your shop. Its just aa ploy to get you in the door. It ends up costing you more than if you had gone somewhere else or had done it yourself. but you went to the dealer because you had a "warenty". And now that you already dragged the car in and made peace with the dealer working on it, you will probablly let them fix it even if its a rip off.

And if you actually do find yourself in a situation where it benefits you (engine blown, tranny blown) they come out swinging. They want your service records, recipts of all your car related purchases, They look for evidence of any kind of mods. Then they hit you with that diagnostic fee. They make you gamble that your claim will pay. If you are wrong it costs you over 500 bucks for their time. So right away they are trying to dissuade you from making a claim. Save your money and dont play their game.

just got everything done today!:D

yeah, what happens is that the dealer buys the car back from ford credit and then sells it to me.  so now i have a loan under only my name -- the lease was under my dad and i was the co-signer, but now everything's mine:)  i took the 4yr loan instead of the 5 yr one, so my payments did go up - by $18 - no big deal.  it's now $201/month.

and as far as the warranty goes - it's for 4yrs 50k miles, and NO deductible.  txfo, it seems like you might have had a bad experience with it, but after what happened to pokes, i'm glad that i have the warranty.

the buy out option for the end of the lease was 6635.  (of course, with interest it comes out to be more)

Congrats Rob. Looking at what you paid for the car, this time, it is close to what I owe on my 01.

As for the Extended warranty. If it is in fact a ford warranty that it might be good. If it is a third party one you are so screwed because you have to pay for the repair than go after the warranty company to pay you back. I was apeshit whan I found out the dealer sold me a third party warranty on my brand new 01 Focus. I was sold it totaly under the assumption that it was a ford extended warranty. Now I have to track down all my paperwork and try and get some money back on it.

As for the Sony I bough used, I told them where they can take the warranty.
