Yes it's possible, but finding the parts and doing it cheaper than it would be to trade it in is gonna be hard part.

I agree it would be possible but not cheap.  Again you would need a donor car with all the parts.  Cheaper, easier, and less of a PITA to trade in the ol' spi and get a manual zetec.

okay we've agreed that it is possible. now what would make it difficult to do? why couldnt i just throw in a manual from another spi? im sure someone can explain this to me.

In order to do it you're going to need the tranny, pedal, cables, shifter, probably the half shafts, and probably the computer.

If you have the proper tools, it's something that can be done by the shade tree mechanic, but you're gonna need help.

If you have good mechanical ability and a working knowledge of automobiles, you shouldn't have any problems.  The most difficult part is going to be finding everything you need for a good price.

I guess all we are trying to say is that after all the time, work, and possibilty that something goes wrong in the process, you are probably better off trading in.  If there is something preventing you from doing so (and it's none of our business if there is) then by all means do the swap.  It can be done.

If you search the old forum, I posted an email address for a guy that sells 1b5 and mtx-75 trans for about 250. can get them loaded with a limited slip for cheap too. In addition to the trans, you will need the clutch, pressure plate, slave cylander, throw out bearing, clutch pedal assembly, Clutch switch, ECU, and main harness. It may be possible to have your stock ECU reflashed by the dealer. most of the other parts can be found in the aftermarket or from the junkyard. I think you can do it just fine. See my trans swap how-to for instructions on removing the auto.

Spec Performance Clutches have been added to mcnew's lineup of parts. They aren't on the site yet. Give them a call to find out pricing and what stage will suit your spi! McNews Automotive 717-432-9503 from the focaljet forum

This is from gigaherz on focaljet:

Took a little searching but this should be it...

secondline@ameritech.net

Terry haines is his name, he can get or do anything to either the mtx or ib5 trans. He's located out of michigan I believe.

The MTX-75 was used in contours, but it is also used in the foci that have the zetec motor. I believe that the MTX was only used in the zetec contours, but I could be wrong. Just  m:cool:y .02

MTX-75 is the zetec manual transmission. I think it was also used on the ZX2 and contour. The focus MTX-75 has the same bolt pattern as the IB5. Seeing that the Auto tranny is the same for SPI and zetec (except for gears) It is very likely that the MTX-75 will mate to the SPI. I know of a few people who are in the process of doing this swap but none who have finished it yet.
