Okay, though some of you have said to just trade in, i think i have decieded......to do the zetec swap. its only about $2K, less than half of a used foci. plus i'll have a brand spankin new engine and tranny. i'm thinking though for the ecu i might as well go aftermarket but the only thing i'm worried about is that pats bs, how the hell does that all work out with a aftermarket ecu like a superchip or diablo chip? or would i be better off just getting an ecu reflashed. the spi is pissin me off now, not enough kick when i need it. i know txfo SHOULD be getting that spi-zetec swap done sometime next year, so i'll be waiting. I prolly wont be upgrading much right after i throw it in, so i'll just have the basics, reuse my screamin demon, get some magnecores for the zetec, get a new cai and a good olde exhaust yeah, good olde zetec, replacing the good olde spi. what if i used the spi and made a dune buggy? wow that would be awsome. i think i might want to keep the spi to do some dumb shit like that with it, beat on it to see how well it holds up to MEGA abuse. well, thats all for now.

you could use the SPI to make a cool sand rail or go cart. I was thinking about that with mine.

If youget the engine from KSGerry, which I assume you are since its a great deal and hes a cool guy. You will need to buy the focus - specific zetec windage tray, flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate, as well as the fuel rail. the windage tray that comes ont he escape engines Gerry sells is about 3/4" too short to bolt to the transmission. also, the clutch is different and has a pilot bearing that is too small. I spent about 2 hours trying to ram the trans onto the engine before I noticed that the part number ont he new clutch is different than the old one. got out the dial caliper and sure as hell the pilot bearing is about 3mm smaller than the input shaft. :X while the flywheel and pressure plate are different too, it looks like you could use them. the flywheel is the same size, just looks a little different. and the pressure plate lines up just fine. We chose to use the old hardware just in case so we wouldnt run into a problem.

as far as the ECU, you will need one for the zetec and wahtever trans you are getting. (manual or auto) then it will either have to be reflashed for your PATS or you will need the ECU with the matching PATS reciever, lock cylander, and keys. Ive talked to randy at focus sport and he is not able to disable the PATS with the SCT software.

or you could do it the easy way and have every part you need by buying a wreck or rebuildable for a cheap price. what you don't need could be sold for cash to buy upgrades.

then again, you could just do repairs on a rebuildable with a zetec...

Just a thought

holy crap someone please tell me how to do the electronic swab imrc thingy!! i wanna have some fun before i trash the spi

Oh yeah, i keep seeing "dont swap its not worth it" on tons of forums. okay i figure that 2K to do the swap is well worth the time and effort. also it seems to even out price wise. even so the zetec has more power than the spi, also more upgradeable and from what i hear the gains on the zetec are more noticeable than the gains on the spi. plus i'll have a better tranny cuz the spi tranny is shit and well more aftermarket parts for cheaper and stuff like that. spi needs everything custom built almost or ghetto rigged to work. zetec is the way to go even though those duratecs are taking over. dohc, bigger t/b, better injectors, better trans, more hp and tq (dont give me that "its only 10/20 shit), better trans, and finally did i mention that the zetec is more upgradeable or should i say easier to find upgrades for. k im out. peace

fuck those people. it isnt that expensive to swap. I promise that the naysayers havent done the swap so consequently have no idea what they are talking about. and youa re right, the biggest benefit is the aftermarket support.

the SPI and zetec use the same auto trans. the SPI manual is actually a BETTER trans. the gears are suck but it is stronger and dosent have the 3rd gear synchro + lubrication problem that the MTX-75 does.

no shit, they use the same auto tranny?? so if i stay auto then i wont need to do a tranny swap unless i go manual? fuckin right.

love the attitude towards the naysayers, i think the swap is well worth the time and effort. they just dont want to say it or havent realized how shitty the spi is cuz they have a zetec already. granted i think the spi is great, i just dont like it cuz it doesnt have the kick i want anymore. also i was researching and some people say that there is little or no difference in the two engines. yeah sure. i believe that. whatever.

there might be a small gearing difference in the two but you CAN mate your current transmission to the zetec.

I KNOW that they mate together. All I am unsure about is the gear ratios. I think that the SPI auto has a slightly different gear ratio than the zetec auto.
