So all of a sudden my exhaust is making this sputtering noise when you step on the gas. I was thinking maybe a leak in the system? I've got a short header from focus central and a magnaflow catback. Could my cat be clogged or something? How would I be able to check? It's making my car sound really bad, like a sick truck.

After the engine is cooled(wait overnight). Start the car and get under it and feel around the exhaust to see/feel where it might be leaking. You kinda have to do it fast before the exhaust gets to hot and you start burning yourself. I would check around the cat and flex pipe area where the piping is still stock. Also check where the header is hooked to the motor.

Ok cool that's pretty much what I figured I was going to have to do. I've never heard what an exhaust leak sounds like before so I don't have any idea if that's what's causing this noise. Everything else fine and the sound is for sure coming from the tail pipe. I hate when problems just pop up out of no where. I was also wondering how I could tell if my header was some how messing up my cat. I heard it could start to "burn through it"?

Yes the shorty header can and will melt the cat. But most of the time you will notice a major performance differance in the car before the sound bothers you. What happens is the cats insides start to melt and it restricts the flow of exhaust thus causing major power loss.

Well I'm at a loss now. I don't think it's an exhaust leak. Went through the entire system and it all seemed fine. And no noticeable power loss at all. I've had to go out of town several times since this has started and my car seems to be running just fine. Anyone have any ideas what might make this sound just come out of no where like this?

Yea did that and still nothings changed. I've got an appointment with ford next wed. I can't think of anything else that might be causing it. Really sucks it's embarassing to take off from a dead stop not.

Silly question and late thought.

Have you put a lit match or somthing around all the mating surfaces to see if air blows out the match or move whayever you use? It would be as simple as a bad gasket. Do you have more than a shorty header? You have a Cat Back?

I found the leak actually just yesturday. Well a leak is completely an understatement. There is a tude that goes from my short header and connects to a copper pipe. The copper pipe busted at the flange. It's come completely off. I changed my appointment with ford and I'm taking it to an exhaust shop tomorrow so they can reweld it back together. I wonder how it broke in the first place.

probably was me :P

yea took it in today. He did a tack weld around part of it but he said I'll have to come back tomorrow so he can take the pipe completely off so he can get around the whole thing the right way. It already sounds much better tho.
