I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a single. It was never one of the "favored" Focus engines. Overall, I think the 2.3 and the Zetec are the best. The SVT is very nice, but it's more difficult to modify than either of the other two.

I bieleve the "SE" could have either in 01 but most likely will have the Zetec DOHC.
The "ZTS" has the Zetec DOHC in it only.
The LX were mostly the SPI SOHC and the no badge ones (not having LX or SE) were a mix of the two but I think more of the SPI motor.
This is talking Sedans only. Not sure about the wagons and all ZX3's have the Zetec DOHC.
A good tell tale sign(but not 100%) for the 00 and 01 Focus without poping the hood is to look at the guage cluster. The SPI motors have no tach and Zetec's have Tachs. In 02+ Ford just started throwing in whatever cluster they grabbed from the pile. If the 00-01 has a gray(not black, on the face) insterment cluster it is a special edition car (unless someone swapped it out over the years). In 03 the 2.3 Pzev cars got the gray insterment clusters.
My 2001 SE dont tell them it's a base model i'm so ashamed.... anyway mine has the SPI. here's my question of the day. does the SPI and the Zetec use the same exhaust manifold?
