To  begin..  I am running amsoil 25K oil in my car and so far so good to this point. (Really this has nothing to do with the oil.) Today I left my car with my dad to change the filter.. my dads no dummy, he knows what hes doing. So I come home and he says.. so when I finally found a filter in the garage I changed it for you.. thats when I got to thinking, I didnt leave my amsoil filter out with my 1/2 qt of oil to go with it. So come to find out he put in a cheapo Super Tech filter (wal mart). It was getting dark and he didnt want to change it out again so I had to dump the 1/2 qt of my amsoil in and I would have to deal with getting more oil and putting the right filter on later. Fine.

I went out to run a few errands and I noticed that the interior of my car began to smell like oil... it was very strong.. but the car ran fine and I was done doing what I was doing. So I headed home. I picked up a friend on the way bc her house is on my way home anyways so it wasnt out of the way. When I came out to my car when we stopped to get a bite to eat I looked underneath and sure as shit I was leaking oil... So I dropped her off and got home.. As I was almost all the way to my apt. this huge BANG!!! went off and it scared the hell out of me.. I didnt kno what it was, only that it came from the engine ( thought of pokes' engine blowing flowed through my mind...) the car was still running and I was at my apt driveway anyways so  i rolled into a spot.. As I did, smoke was pouring out from under the hood! I opened the hood to see oil sprayed EVERYWHERE!!! and the oil cap sitting on my engine?!?!?! Somehow pressure built up somewhere and caused it to shoot off...causing the noise and the mess.

I am beside myself right now and have no idea how this happened. I specifically remember making sure the cap was on, and on good. There are ideas boiling about what is could be but I cant find anything on this on any boards. So now, not only so I not have the right filter on, I HAVE NO OIL IN MY CAR EITHER.  :(

I could do one of two things. Clean all the oil up and start from scratch ( new oil, new filter) or I can clean it up, add oil, put everything stock back on and send it back to the dealer. Is it even possible that this is coincidental from changing the filter ?? I have no idea. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. This is really hitting me hard, why, i dont know... its not like I haven't dealt with a broken focus before.. Does anyone have any suggestions???

FX3 and possibly some others are coming over in the morning to see if they cant see what they know what it is... I'll take pics in the morning and keep all updated..

Im sorry lady :(  that sux lots and lots

i dont know what to tell you, im no good at this stuff so i dont know what could have caused that... as long as there arent holes in the engine then Im sure there is probably somehting that can be done with it

check the oil level, make sure something is in it and get it checked... dont panic until you know whats up (like  i did) it brings on more stress than you alrwady have

hang in there lady... it will all be alright!!!

Thats f-n weird. Never heard of this happening in my life, and I know my fair share of car people. Hmmm. I'll keep thinking of a possible explanation for this. The only thing I can think of is that the oil cap was never put back on, but you said that it was. Is the cap still in one piece? Are the threads messed up on it? I'm not really sure about the bang though. Where was the oil cap found on the motor? Wow you got me stupmed. If I had to guess, I would say it was never put back on, but you said that it was, so there goes that idea. Hmmmm.:(

did your dad maybe do a full oil change and the 1/2 quart amsoil react with the other oil?

Haha. You said wiggle. And then you said 6 inches. You made me laugh. Hmmm. Well you got me stumped as to what could have cause it. There isn't any considerable pressure inside your valve cover to make it blow off like that. At least there shouldn't be. Hmmmm, I guess I'll keep thinking of what it could possibly be.

Get yourself some good engine degreaser, cover up your electronics and your air filter, then go to town. You might even wanna use a pressure washer, just be careful of what you aim it at and how long you hold it there for. Might do some damage to some things if youre not careful.

Yea thats what dan said, bag my filter on my cold air, make sure everything is good and covered if it needs to be and head to the car wash... Any suggestions on a degreaser to use?

I'm retty sure most of the degreasers are the same thing. Gunk is one brand that comes to mind. I think it comes in an orange and blue can. Spray everything down real good and let it soak in for a few minutes. Rinse it off and if needed, do it again. Maybe even simple green cleaner (full strength) might work well, although I've never used it as a heavy degreaser. Oh ya, one more thing, you probably wanna head to the car wash first, before youi ncover anything up. I dont think your filter would like being covered up too much.

in order to blow the cap off with oil pressure, you would have to be drowning the valves. like, a completely full head.

PCV - positive crankcase ventilation. A valve used to relieve positive crankcase pressure fromt eh top of the pistons so that the engine will rev more freely. It sounds extreme but I suppose it could build up enough pressure to pop the top. replace the PCV valve (located on the oil seperator) and make sure your breather isn't clogged. (replace the filter if you are using one)

as far as cleaning - I never use the pressure washer. simple green and a rag work fine.

if you really want to use the sprayer, get a can of engine brite from vatozone. we used to use that in the detail shop at Alamo exotics.

oh. I called a meeting of the minds. we all concur that your PCV system is plugged. either by a stuck valve or a pinched hose. after replacing the valve, check the hose to make sure it isnt kinked or plugged anywhere. also look in the oil seperator to be sure that that is plugged. you might have to remove it to inspect it. You will need a new gasket for it. Make sure you get this fixed, you are lucky you didnt blow the cover or the oil pan!

yeah, something definately was wierd about how the oil cap just blew off like it did.  my first reaction was to put the cap back on and see ti any threads were stripped or if it was warped/mis shaped or anything...nothing out of the ordinary.  what TFXO said makes sense, if the PCV is/was plugged, that can lead to problems as well....
