Is there a difference between a AEM or Injen or Egay Cold air intake? besides MAYBE just the AEM bypass valve. that can be put on all other CAIs..but really is there a difference except price?

Quality and degree of correct fitment and filter it comes with.
I know that the ebay long tube cold air has cheap flimsy mounts, no dirrections, and thefit is not quite right. The filter is also the ricer type. Br33nlemon has one and he uses the filtersound like you would a shift light.
I am going to guess that te AEM tubing is a little thicker but I am not sure. You can also get the AEM i a few differant colors.
I believe they both function the same and give the same gains tho.
all intakes work the same wether I made it myself or paid alot for it. the difference is in the fitment and the properties of the materials used. A good plastic tube intake will not get heat soak as badly as the metal ones. however, all plastics are not equal. there are thicker and more rigid pieces that resist heat better than the thinner ones.
there is also the issue of MAF housing. most of the true cold air intakes require you to take the MAF sensor out of its housing and bolt it inside the intake tube. this is fine provided the diameter of the tube is ths smae as the housing. I have seen a few intakes on ebay where the pipe is 3" where the MAF sensor goes. without adjusting the MAF transfer function or recalibrating the sensor's wheatstone bridge, you have to use the correct size housing.

Here is what I have on my car...
FocusSport Air Intake
FocusSport Plug Wires
FocusSport Upper Strut Bar
65mm Throtle Body
2.5" Borla Exhaust
Steeda Short Shift
MAC Rear Engine Mount
BAT Lowering Springs w/adustable SPAX Shocks
Dual Guage Pod with Air/Fuel and Volt Meter Guages
Makes a difference...in what way? the sound they make? Here is what I have on my car and I don't know that it made a difference in my SVTF...and I think FocusSports is one of the better ones...just my opinion...

Don't get me wrong...with the mods I've done, everyone who has driven the car loves it and says this is what the SVTF should have been like from the factory...but, the Steeda short shift, engine mount and suspension is a definite improvement that I can feel...but I can't say the same about the air intake....

i'd say for short ram intakes, get one off of ebay. If you're thinking of a true cold air intake, then you probably wanna get name brand. first of all the short rams on ebay are way cheaper and are pretty much the same thing as more expensive ones. the true cai's on ebay are pretty comparable to brand name ones, usually only about 10-20 dollars in difference so a brand name would be wise to purchase. just my here

very true, although most people like me don't have the cash to dyno small stuff like air intakes. although i'd love to do it if i had my own dyno or a friend that would let me use theirs. but anyways. yeah. i think you got it.

I loved AEM on my other cars, and could tell a difference. I will tell you if it's any different with my Focus when I get it with my Thermal R&D exhaust.
For any CAI I would suggest getting a Bypass valve after a friend of mine has just blown out the bottom of the motor from sucking up some water. I have a bypass and have hit some huge puddles on accident and have had no problems at all.

Audio, I have the Bombz (Ebay/AEM clone) CAI, on my car! The brackets do suck but other than that its a pretty good tube. I reinforced my bottom bracket by attaching a Sprinkler system hanger under the frame rail and handing the filter side of the intake from that. I have installed a AEM bypass valve too for emergency water pick-up although the thing does still pick up a bit of water every now and then. The maf sensor goes into the tube perfectly. And I was able to run some pretty respectible numbers with it. http://teamfocus.mywowbb.com/view_topic.php?id=3448&forum_id=11&jump_to=29516#p29516 I also have a short ram that is good in cold wet weather. They are pretty much the same when you are moving as it flushes that hot air out of the engine compartment.

I don't think my CAI came with instructions at all. That's okay. I'd rather look the instructions up on the internet and pay 1/3 of the price for a Bomz than the AEM name.

I put a custom cold air on my 2000 Ford Focus SE, and i can hear and feel the difference. So far all i got is cai and exhaust, cat back....custom as well....and with thoes 2 combined it is prety loud. I wll get a pic of my cai when i can and get it on here. but i think they next thing i am getting is a racing clutch....mine is starting to slip and i have only had the car for about a year..it sucks....and then i am getting hot wires and such...but thats just my !!!!!

The intake will make a big differance depending on what you buy. Of course if you waste your money on a e bay cheapy then no your not going to notice any gains. I have the Volant and it's great!
If you want good gains you do have to pay the money. All intakes are not the same. The Volant I got is Dyno tested as one of the best if not the best for gains. The Volant alone with no other mods will give 5-8hp. This is a good amount of power gain for a "bolton" type part. The Volant isn't a cold air intake so you don't have to worry about hydro locking your engine. Someone posted the MAF in this thread it is key to where and how it is placed. And I would rather have a quality tested product that will produce gains then something that might case engine problems down the road. The only set back with the Volant is it's pricey at $250
