I have the volant intake.. love it to death.. anyways.
Been doing a lot of thinking.... I hear nothing but good things about that ITG filter that focussport is rocking.... I'm wondering if I can get my hands on that filter and through it in the volant if it would make a nice difference... I mean thats suppose to be the hottest filter on the market right now...
So I was just thinking...

I've got an intake, but not a Volant. This is just my $.02. I find it pretty hard to believe that an airfilter would make much difference. I've changed back & forth with stock, K&N's, and a bunch of other after market filters. I've never noticed one iota of difference in performance or mileage. I also remember that Car & Driver dynoed a couple of different cars with stock filters & then with K&N. The results revealed absolutely no difference.

Is the volant a closed intake. That is, is the filter in an enclosure and just has an opening at the top? If so, how big is that enclosure?
The reason I ask is that the ITG filter set up is going to cost you about $200 if I remember correctly, correct me if I am wrong on that. If the enclosure is big enough the I may have a solution for ya for a fraction of the cost.
Amsoil sells a cone two stage foam filter. Its an OEM filter though for the Mustang, but its a cone filter. It has no neck on it to which you could clamp down to an intake tube, but you can get an adapter for that, just slap it on there, seal it up really good and clamp it down. I did so with my AEM intake and then did it again when I changed out the metal AEM intake tube for the plastic K&N FIPK II intake tube.
As for performance gains, you may not see a whole lot. However, if you are flowing more air then there will be gains in performance. As you know paper filters are pretty restrictive, but clean the air well. K&N type filters (wetted cotton gauze) flow more air but tend to be a little on the horrible side in filtering out finer particles. Amsoil's two stage foam filters are a fine foam like the ITG filter covered with a coarser foam and are oil treated. So you get the best of both worlds, more air flow and great filtration, even on the finer dust particles.
You arent going to break any time records at the track by just changing out the filter, but Ive ran paper, K&N and Amsoil filters in my Focus and I definately will be sticking with the Amsoil filter. Each car is going to be a little different and I think this is even more so with the focus because the cam timing can be so different from one Focus to the next. I didnt notice a huge difference when I switched from the K&N to the Amsoil filter but it does pull a bit better on the low end. This is helped in part by the fact that the Amsoil filter is a little bigger than the K&N and it flows a little better.
If you get some measurements of the enclosure for the volant I should be able to tell if the Amsoil filter will fit in there. If the volant isnt enclosed then Im almost 100% certain it will fit.

It whines a lot, but I like it
The problem with finding the appropriate ITG filter is that the Volant has a very large diameter opening, I think it's 4 1/2" maybe more, (I have one I just can't remember). I know when I changed the filter to a K&N filter I had looked for an ITG filter and had an extremely difficult time finding one that would fit, the other issue is that a good number of the ITG filters have metal housing parts which may make it extremely difficult to cram through the top of the volant box.
