I was in my car last night and I didnt notice this, wondering if anyone can help me out.

I was on my way to work this morning and i noticed that my car was really running... well.. terrible. Its hard to explain it so I'll have some people go for a ride tomorrow and maybe they can shed some light on it. Basically.. i was on the highway in stop and go traffic. When i press my gas... its fine... but when I let my foot off the gas, its almost liek my car thinks im downshifting and it bucks... now i know there is a slight "pull" so to speak when you let your foot off the gas, btu this is nothing like that...

I havent really had time to play with it much, maybe on my way from one job to another tonight I can test it out some more... with what info you have, any suggestions ?

Few things I'd check:

1 - Do you have an aftermarket TB? These are known to stick and slam shut etc.

2 - DPFE problems  Might need a new one.

I'd also mention your fuel filter and air filter, but that would cause issues with acceleration more than throttle off.

It's a Ford? just thought I'd throw that out there. I bet it's a DPFE, if you are on the acc lightly does it feel as though it is stuttering?

Another test for the DPFE which seems to be the same throughout - you'll feel a surging sensation between say 2200 & 3000 rpms.  You really need to pay attention to feel it in some instances.

Dan - ice/snow in the wheel - will give you shake more than a stalling/bucking feeling. thilly wabbit:driv

mine bucks if I'm hard on the throttle and then let off quickly, also if I'm hard on the throttle and then get on the clutch quickly, both ways it bucks a good bit.

It goes bad easily Tiffany.  I've had mine replaced 2 times in 2 years in my 2002.  They work with your emissions system/fuel system and foul all the time. This causes hesitation, bucking, stammering and funky idle jumps and dumps.

I'd have them look into it if you've never had one replaced.  It's almost a part that needs regular replacement like the fuel filter.  Have you had that changed?

Here are some key maintenance points:
1 - Fuel Filter needs to be changed once a year
2 - PCV Valve needs to be changed once a year
3 - Air filter - depends on what you're using - stockers I change 2 times a year pending how many miles I drive and if there has been a lot of dust, dirt etc.
4 - Always check your plugs for fouling and that your wires are secure

I'm putting money on the DPFE being bad.  there is a TSB out on it btw Oh, and if you still have warranty - get it done because this thing is WAY too expensive for how often it shits the bed.

Chelly the DPFE needs to be replaces more often then the fuel filter. Seems like every time I bought gas for the focus I needed a new DPFE. And at over 80 bucks a pop, that gets expensive. Seriously though, after I put my new DPFE in, it felt like it was bad again less than a month later. Stupid ford. Why do I buy ford still?????

The DPFE's are crap - Ford knows it.  My buddy @ Starkey knows it.  They fail all the time and within short periods.  They really need to consider an alternative manufacturer or find a way to do away with the damn thing.  The newer ones have been re-engineered.  I'm hoping I don't have to fool around with mine much.

The worst part with these stupid things, other than the hestitation and stammering is the cost if you aren't within warranty.  You're right - for $80 bucks you'd think you'd have a part that would last longer than a year!

PS - the re-engineered ones, from what I understand, don't work on the older years.  I need to verify this though.

Hey Tiff, did you figure this out yet?

Thanks for all your help, ill let you know how it turns out.

DPFE, Anyone got a pic. I had mine replace at the dealer 20 miles before warranty went out on it and it needs to be dne again.

Another point on the list of regular maintenance are the following:

Check the accessory belt regularly especially if you have an aftermarket UDP, they can chaffe and sometimes the ones shipped are too big or small and may break easily or pop off

Next, the coolant and PS fluid. A lot of Foci are prone to small leaks on the bottom of the PS pump that overtime will cause a whining sound when turning. I checked mine and tried to nurse it along until I could get a PS pump and replace it, the pump and rack went bad, ouch. Little more rare on the rack.

One other item that I make it a point to check if you have an aftermarket CAI, especially an AEM or AEM lookalike, check the wiring for the MAF sensor and where it connects with the looming for the coil pack. This sometime separates under stressed conditions and may start fires or cause CEL to ping.
