My car's got em. If I'm jrs, (just riding along), it's smooth as glass. then all of a sudden it hiccups. Feels like somebody turned the key off & on suddenly. It's much faster than that though. ..very short duration. This can happen at any speed. Doesn't happen under acceleration/deceleration, or at idle. I've felt it anywhere from 30 to 70 mph, but more so between 35-50. Happens with cruise control on of off. It's not very frequent. Sometimes I'll get 2 or 3 in a row within say, a minute or two. Other times it'll happen 2 or 3 times in a half hour.

My 1st reaction was to think it's an eletrical prob, like a bad spark plug wire. I ckecked them & they're fine. Somehow, it doesn't feel like an electrical prob. I doubt if it's bad gas, because it's happened over the span of several tanks. Any ideas?

How did you check the plugs and wires?  A visual inspection, particularly with the wires is not going to reveal much.  Any CEL's?

I did check them visually. The high school's auto shop has a tester. You remove the wire, plug ea end into the machine, & it tells you if it's completing the circuit. They were all good. BTW, they're Ford Racing 9mm wires.

DPFE, this sounds exactly like a DPFE EGR crapping out, common problem, and there is a extended warranty on them from Ford.

DPFE - MAF - Fuel Filter - Plugs - Wires

Good luck man.

You know - this is a small rant - Ford should really make these walk in and walk out parts (DPFE's).  If yours is gone Mr. V - I really seal my case with it.  I haven't met someone yet who hasn't had to have theirs replaced.

They're back. They've been gone for nearly 6 weeks. They just went away on their own. Took a 1 hr trip today to see the kids. It was my oldest grandson's 7th birthday. Is there anyway I can ck out the DPFE myself?

Not really, it's just a small silly sensor, sometimes it can take a long time for it to trip the MIL, I'd take it into Ford, this part is covered for a very long time, mainly because they know it's crap.

I would lean more in the area of the MAF. Just give it a good cleaning. Do you have any mods? Like a Chip?

Yes, I've got mods, but no chip. I also bought the extended warantee...the one where literally everything is covered, bumper to bumper. The only reason I hesitate to take it in, is that I can't always duplicate the symptoms. I drove about 50 miles today, and it was perfect.

I've taken mine in before and made them check it out even with them telling me they can't feel it.
I think I've had mine replaced 2-3 times now and I can feel it again. It's useless replacing mine I think. :( Getting a new one makes it better for maybe a month and then it's back.
I don't know how they would do that with the extended warranty though.
DPFE is the very first thing I thought of. The only time I tripped the CEL was when I also had a bad O2 sensor.

omg shouldn't they?!
And my dealer always looks at me funny when I take it in and tell them to check the DPFE sensor.
Um yeah, when it goes bad all of the time I should know what's wrong with my car, right? :P

I would think if the same thing keeps going wrong with the car then it's the result of something else being wrong. I had the same problem with my car, after several weeks of checking things in ended up being what I thought it was to begin with and that's the chip, but you said you don't have a chip that's why I would lean to the MAF, still could be DPFE. Who knows for sure. I think I would just bring it in and give the dealer the list of items you think it might be. I too have had the "could not duplicate the problem" issue with the dealers, it can become a frustrating battle. Let us know what you find out.

Yes I have the symptoms. Just a slight hesitation whenever I am cruising at a steady speed. Never really when I am accelerating and I've never noticed when I was braking. I've actualy hd the stealership tell me it is a normal Focus problem (the stuttering) and they wouldn't even look at it.

And to be honest, I don't have a clue what DPFE stands for.

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation
