Yep. Started sunday night and still doing it. It is also backfiring and I have never seen a focus backfire through the exhaust.

I changed the PCV Valve and fuel filter last weekend. THe guy at autozone did not want to check for engine codes.

The CEL light is not on...

The backfiring happens when I go to take off from a stop and there is also a huge hesitation when taking off.

Any thoughts. It seemed to happen all of a sudden. Parked it one night moved it the strtt so it wouldn't get towed and than when moving it back about 8 hours later the stuttering was there.

The only time I have ever heard backfiring from a focus was with Chris's car and the mess of problems he had from taking in water... I dont know which fixed it the mass air sensor or the TPS... send him a pm maybe ??

Check your timing belt? Isn't backfiring usually a side effect of bad timing?

misfiring plug.

the stutter is the missfire and the backfire is from unburnt gas in the exhaust.

thats my guess anyways.

#2 plug was a bit up when I checked to make sure they were on good.

There is still no CEL light but I think I may have driven it all of 10 miles sense Sunday
If I keep the pedal above 1/2 way than the car seems to be better, or if I run it around 4 grand theres no stutter either.

yep. the backfiring is a good indicator. it is caused by pressure lighting off unburnt vapor. this means that you have a leaky injector, a fluttering timing belt, incorrect timing, a bad plug or coil, cracked exhaust valve or seat, worn out valve spring.

the fact that it happens over 4K or at > 1/2 throttle points me towards tensioner or valve spring. :)

Ok.

I changed the plugs and it has mostly cured the problem but its still there (a little bit) but more to the WOT end now. I will change the coil out this weekend and try the wires also. Cil #4 plug had some hard white crap on the plug end, don't know if that was causing any problem or not.

Talked to Dan about this earlier and turns out it was his coil. He had my stock coil at his mom's house so he tried it cause it was free. and that was the problem.;slap
