One thing you really need to understand with these so called "Short Throw" shifters is that they are not ususally a true short throw.

Fellas, correct me on this, but last I knew the only short throw that comes close to being a true shorty is avail. through Steeda?

I know the cheapy one I got from e-bay has always worked well for me in my 2k2 - haven't put it in my 2k3 yet.  I think the cost for mine was a total of about $50 shipped.

Also, when changing this out...go to Ford, get yourself a couple Bearings - I have one I'll take a pic of and post...these things are prone to breaking!

Oh PS - I'd always keep going to Ray before most places FYI

Ford Racing, Steeda's tri-ax, and Focus Central are all short throw shifters. There is a difference between a short throw and a short shifter.

Some short shifter assemblies is basically just a shorter shift stick.

All three above use a revised pivot point which shortens the throw of the shift, along with a shorter shifter stick. Some maintain the reverse lock-out and others don't. Some are shorter than others, though I don't know which ones.

I'm looking for both, a short throw and a short shifter.. does that make sense? What do you guys and gals have out there? I am noticing that mine will be slightly more expensive for 2002.5 (april) and newer models. I have an 03, so that would be me....

Mine is strictly for show...it does not shorten the actualy throw of the shifter.

Dan, can you help me on this one?  I can't remember your answer to this one.

I believe that the Focus Central one is the shortest throw, but not the shortest shaft, the Ford Racing one has a longer throw and the shortest shaft, and I think that the steeda has a pretty short throw with a slightly longer shaft.

Be aware that a really short shaft can make it difficult to reach the shifter through all the gears.

So with that in mind. Focus Central would be my best bet?  A shorter shaft than stock, but not so short i will have problems...

I found out after the fact... The Ebay ones and the B&M (what I have) are basicly a short shift and not a short throw. The FC one and the Steena are both short thrown and slightly shorter in length than the stock shifter.

Chelly you're Ebay one will not fit the 2003. It will fit the Sony tho. Now I need to decide what to do with it seen as how no one wants to buy it (the Sony that is).

If I had to do it all over again I would probbaly buy the steeda tri-ax one. When it comes to a manual tranny and speed shifting you want the shortest distance you can get between gears. The short shift ones do that by limiting the drivers arm movement but the cables still move the same distance under the pivit ball. The short throw shifters do roughly the same thing but by shortening under the pivit ball keeping the drivers arm in a more natural place. In saying this there is no way to get a true short throw shifter into a cable or rod driven shifter mechanism. In reality to get a true short throw you would have to change the gear box on the transmission itself and get redesigned cables. You could than use the stock shifter lever inside the car and you would notice a huge differance in the throw.

I have driven a 96 Mustang Cobra with a short throw shifter in it and going from 1st to 2nd was about 2 inches and from 1st to 5th was about 3 inches with a really stiff shift. But with that car the shifter sits on top of the tranny where gears and shift forks were weplaced to attain the short throw. The stick was about 1-2 inches shorter than stock.

And to answer your question Tiff. no its not to hard to replace. The 2 most difficult parts are getting the E-brake boot off the console and taking off that plactic lock washer. But you may not even have that washer with the new design you have. I haven't looked at an 02.5+ shift base yet.

IMO, the Steeda is the way to go...slightly shortens the throw, just enough to make it feel jussssst riight, and looks good too.  i think i paid 108 shipped for mine, straight from steeda.  if i had to go with a second choice, id choose the Ford Racing one (which, if you read Ray's link, is the same):P

as far as driving goes, there are some that take the whole fun out of driving and ive driven a civic Si like that..theres no fun in shifting.  the Steeda is fun to drive on and makes for quick snappy shifting, kinda like this guy -->:driv

It's too bad the guys at Steeda are total dickheads! I will *never buy anything Steeda (or attempt to buy anything Steeda) again!

Ugh. My husband ordered one for Christmas for me. He was promised it would arrive in time. Well it never came even though they charged the card. Come to find out through another board that people who ordered AFTER me had already received theres! They will never get a penny of my money the way they treated us about it.

edited to make it a little more friendly

I have the Steeda tri-ax shifter and like it alot.  The throws are shorter and the shifter shaft is just right, not to long, not to short.
