let's play guess the problem agin and again and again....... - Zetec Performance - Performance Central - Team Focus - Come On In And Enjoy The Company!
i dont know what the hell is going on with my 00 zx3. im runing a sound system with a capacitor and on the cap it has a volt meeter which is reading 12.4 volts. when i go to turn the car over all i get is a click and that is it. earler today i washed out the engine compartment and then turned it over with no problem at all. my thoughts are that the coil pack is dead. if neone has ne thoughts on this problem it would be greately appricated. thanks
you wash it before or after the car died? If before I bet if you remove the spark plug boots you will see water covering the spark plugs LOL...i did that once a long time ago.

what kind of battery? sounds like its on its last leg(bad cell) and the stereo isnt helping any with the problem.
the meter on the cap is just showing what the cap is drawing. may be its drawing the juice from the alternator and the battery isnt getting any to recharge.
try running with the stereo off and see how it is. if it starts right up without a problem, the stereo is your problem. if not, its your battery. if the battery needs to be replaced, get an optima yellow...
Yeah I'm gonna go with "Battery" on this one Regis- final answer.
First off, WELCOME to Team Focus! This is the best place to go for all your Focus wants, needs, questions, answers... if we can't answer your question, we'll do our best to find out why!
Now that that's outta the way- your coil has nothing to do with wether or not your car will crank over. That's the starter's job. If your coil was bad your car would just crank and crank and crank and just never start.
Also, if you're running a mega sound system, there's no better battery than an Optima Yellow Top. It's designed for vehicles with high battery drain, such as vehicles with large sound systems. Yes, it costs like $150. But it'll save you a lot of time and energy recharging batteries.
I hope you enjoy your stay here at Team Focus. Avoid the clap!

And maybe totaly disconnect your stereo from the battery when troubleshooting just to rule out the stereo completly.

Well I ruled out the solenoid because he hears a "click" when he turns the key- that "click" is the solenoid doing it's job. It could be the starter motor, I guess, but starters take a serious pounding before they go bad. Unless he was starting the car and keeping the key turned after the car fired up, the starter should be fine.
Usually, if you hear the click but no cranking, 99 times out of 100 it's a dead (or near-dead) battery.

I would start with the battery. If a new battery doesn't fix the problem witch I think it will then there are alot of things to check. In my previous car (Escort GT) I had the same problem and it turned out to be the ignition switch on the steering wheel. I would put the key in and it would just click. Try to bypass the solenoid with the screw driver trick. If it still works with the focus that is. That way you can try and track down the problem. If the car starts up with a new battery but in a day or so ends up dieing again I would then consider an alterator. Just some thoughts... Could always get a volt meter to check the voltage to the battery from the alternator..
