Anyone swapped out the ATX for a MTX?  Automatic transmission to Manual.?  I want to do this.  I hate my automatic...my left foot is bored.  Any ideas or feedback?  anyone done this?  It doesnt seem too hard.

I think it'd be very involved and expensive. You'd need the tranny, the complete clutch/pressure plate, pedal mechanism & hanger, gear shift linkage, new console, and a new ecu. Manuals also have different throttle bodies, and possibly different gear ratios in the differential, although I'm not sure about the last item. I wouldn't be surprised to learn there are more differences.

I'm not trying to be negative here, but IMO, it might be less expensive to sell or trade your car for a 5 spd. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to spent almost as much as buying a different car before you're finished.

If your foci is a zetec the swap wouldn't be to tough.
If your rocking a spi, well that's another question.

I think Mr. V is right big time swap. Think about it, if it was easy there would be a lot of this going on. And you don't hear this being done to often. Actually I never have.

The ECU because the shift points are programed into the Chip for an ATX. And not at all for a MTX

Not nessesarily. The car could become confused for lack of a better term. It would throw a bunch of check engin codes at you. And it might not run right at all. But that's an easy fix. Just get a SCT chip. All problems solved. Then again this is a lot of guessing on my part. I also think this would be the least of your problems during this kind of mod.

Shouldn't have to replace the ECU, though the throttle body, and then a bunch of things on the lower end, I've heard of a few people doing this, though I don't know how successful they were in the end.

IMO and this is just my opinion. But if you are gong to be tearing your whole car apart to change out the tranny, then while your car is outta comission, why not cinvert it to RWD while you are there? Now i am certainly not one to ask how to do this, hell for all i know you can't convert 4 banngers to RWD.....Oh yah and i also heard that swapping trannys is a bitch and a half....i know a guy who did it to his car and i was his ride for 3 months......but whatever you do good luck!!!

I don't know how to do this, but, I know of a beautiful 5speed tranny sitting in a junkyard in Saco, ME that was babied and had Amsoil synth in it!

you can use the ATX ECU, its been done.

talk to randy at focus sport. you might be able to use an Xcalibrater to reflash the ECU with a manual program.

FYI, the only difference in between ECUs is the manual ECU will have the JTEC section unpopulated. this means you can use an auto in a manual but not a manual in an auto.  You couldnt even reflash it because the trans circuit is depop'd.
