ok, just recently i noticed a drinding noise everytime i shift my '00 SE into 3rd gear....the only time it doesn't do it is when i shift hella slow.....and when i am crusing n 4th and i let off the gas, it acts like it wants to shift to Nuetral.....cause the shifter bounces. Anyone got any ideas on how much this tranny is going to cost me? cause i might jsut sell the damn thing or trade it in.

yeah uuuuuh be careful of that, my mtx-75 tranny died a while ago and it was doing stuff like that.  I think it has to do with the linkages internally.  but id try to find out if you can do anything about it.

First off, adjust your cables. This should take care of your 4th gear problem. Also, remember that your shifter does move around as you accelerate and decelerate. You may have not noticed it before and just now realized it and so it's freaking you out. Shifters move around! As long as it's not popping out of gear, there's nothing to worry about.

Your grinding sound when going into 3rd: PFF had the same problem. Sounds to me like it's a broken / worn out syncro. It comes from abuse. It's not going to cause any immediate harm... your tranny will wear out a little faster but nothing you need to worry about for now. I drove (and raced) PFF for well over a year with a broken 3rd gear syncro. Just don't go rough on it when you don't have to. If you're just cruising around, shift slow or double-clutch 3rd (take it out of gear with the clutch pedal down, let up on the clutch and rev up, push the clutch in and shift). When you're racing, fuck it and forget it.

This would be the perfect time to change your gear lube if you haven't already. I don't know what gear lube Ford reccomends for your tranny (check your owners manual). Go a little bit thicker than what it says if you can. This will help out with the gear grinding. Make sure you stay on top of changing the gear lube. I'd say you probaby want to do it twice as often as before just to keep the metal shavings cleaned out.

I generally agree, but that synchronizer, if that's what it is, isn't going to get any better. It'll only get worse with time. Double-clutching will help, but it has two bad points: 1. it's a black art, and 2. it's extremely habit forming and is a difficult habit to kick once you become proficient at it.

I'm not sure about using a heavier weight lube. IMO, that's unlikely to do any good. Change the lube, for sure, but I'd suggest using the new Ford full synthetic mtx lube. It's not the atx lube that comes from the factory.  I changed mine to this. I'm pretty sure it's green in color, and it's quite expensive. I can say that it made a significant difference in the ease and quietness of shifting. Heavier weight lube probably won't lube any better, and will make shifting even harder than it is now.

I could be wrong, but when my syncro went out everyone told me to run thicker gear oil. I never did so I can't say. I never even changed my gear lube in the 98k+ I had the thing :) The syncro went out at about 50k.

There's no reason to, unless something pretty catastrophic happens. Since the mtx case is sealed, no dirt or contamination can get in. Small metal shavings caused by normal wear fall to the bottom of the case & stay there. They don't circulate. Same with differentials. Changing before 100K is just wasting your money. The only reason I changed mine was because of a leaking rear seal. That was fixed under warantee. I also put a Centerline Stage II clutch in while it was apart.

ATX is different, & specs call for changing it something like every 25K if I remember right.

i had that exact problem with my tranny, and it was third gear, but at around 94k my tranny died, it got stuck n first gear.  what had happened is a rollpin inside the tranny snapped in two, and it wouldnt disengage first gear, it stayed in the last gear i was in..  1300 dollars later i have a new clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, cables, and that new shifter casing with the rollpin... pretty damn expensive problem, it happened so random too, i just pulled into a parking spot, noticed i was a little too close to the car next to me, started my car back up n it wouldnt shift.....sucky situation...

Sherms - I'd have it fixed As soon as you can, but in the meantime, just like Mr. V said I'd change out the lube (the Ford Synth ATF is very expensive, but there are alternatives avail that are just as good, if not better)

Need to be gentle with your baby.
