sounds like fuel starvation somewhere - fuel pump is my first guess, clogged injectors? (do you put injecter fluid through at least 2 times per year?

Have you cleaned your MAFS and replaced your DPFE?

Actually, on my 2k2 ZX3 I had two failed DPFE's and never through a code.  My service wrighter didn't understand it either, but they confirmed that it was shot.

It's a part of the emissions system and is a PITA because they crap out all the time.

my ongoing statement is the Focus should come w/ a 6 pack of these in the glove box.  A bad one causes a stammering at speeds of around 2000 - 2800 rpms/  very noticable there.

Best of luck to ya - there parts are about what $50 or so?  Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Check for a TSB - they may have extended the warranty on this for your car.

If your DPFE is the problem, you can buy the $50 sensor or block your EGR for free... as long as you don't have to pass emissions tests, and don't mind a constant CEL.

This is the area you'll be working in. Find the two bolts on the part in that pic. It'll be two 7/16" bolts connecting a metal tube to the EGR valve (the round metal disc looking thing in the pic. Loosen, but DO NOT REMOVE them.

Drink a beer. Take a pair of scissors and cut the can, you need a piece of aluminum about 1"x2" if I recall correctly.

Slip the piece of aluminum from the can in between the EGR and the tube.

Tighten the bolts back.

You can either do it that way, or remove the EGR valve and make a plate to go between them. You can also buy a plate for usually $5-10, but why do that when this way is free?

No, unless you consider the "check engine light" staying on a problem.

Your car will actually run better than stock.

may not be the prob. i discovered what the prob was on one of mine. grab yourself a can of carb cleaner and spray the base of each injector, give it a good shot, and see if the rpm changes. if it does... theres your problem. change the injector orings if you do hear a change, that would be a vacuum leak that most dont even think of looking for.
i discovered it while using ether very much by accident...lol
