Okay, so I got tired of all the heat soaking from the AEM short ram intake. I cant do a CAI because of my love of storms and I can get in some really deep water and not to mention the muddy roads. So there were only a few options available. Not to mention being able to use my Amsoil air filter was an absolute must.
So I broke down and hunted for a K&N FIPK system. Found one another Focus owner was going to part with and finally purchased it. I got it about a week ago and it couldnt have had better timing with the high pressure system that has been sitting over us and bringing in the heat. Heat indexes approaching 110 degrees.
First order of business was finding another adapter for the intake since the AEM intake was of a different size than the K&N intake. I got that taken care of and was a bit easier than it was for the AEM intake. I installed the intake, heat shield and all the other stuff along with my beloved Amsoil 2-stage filter.
I take it out for a test drive and you could IMMEDIATELY tell a difference. Not only was the exhaust signature much throatier, but it pulled through the powerband much much better. The AEM intake, when it was heat soaked would have a studder of sorts as it approached the higher end of power band. One of the ways that I knew it was getting hot and that it was time to shift.
So I drive around for a while to make sure that its good and hot under the hood and then set out on a low traffic piece of road and run it through the gears. STILL it pulled good through the power band, no studder and a very nice and throaty sound to the exhaust. I guess the intake tube being made of plastic makes a real difference. So now do I not only have the punch of the short ram style intake but I have much less effect from the heat.
So far Im loving it. Not only that, my MAF sensor is better located. On the AEM intake they had that thing vertical on the tube which made it a bit of a chore to get on and off. With the K&N intake it is once again horizontal like the stock mount. So I can get to it much easier.
I didnt pay full price for the intake, but after having it on, I wouldnt hesitate too much. I certainly hope that when Amsoil gets around to making their induction system its on par with the FIPK system. Though knowing Amsoil they will wait until they have something better, which is good for those wanting the quality, bad for those that just cant wait.
