Well, as many of you know about 2 months ago my engine blew and i had a new one put in. Ever since then on the passangers side there has been like a grease leak (many of you have been witness to it as i bitch about it quite frequently).

At first there was thought it was just excess grease from when they put everything back together. There was a discovery of some connection hanging down by my tire (Rob found that, Chris got dirty and fixed it for me :)) and we thought that once that was back maybe the grease thing would go away. Alas, it hasnt :(

SO, wednesday i called the ford dealer where i got it fixed (NOT where i like to take my car mind you) and told them about it, asked if they could look at it. Said he thought it was probably the CV joint. OK... is it strange that it started happening right AFTER they replaced the engine? Could they have messed it up/busted it up when they dropped the engine and put in the new one? Would I have seen signs before the engine blew if the joint was going? (I do have white rims, any kinda leakage is VERY noticeable on them).

My biggest thing is i dont want to shell out any money for something that THEY would ahve messed up when my engine exploided without warning is all. I have the distinct feelin its NOT a cheap fix either... so im lookin for anything to fight with to save me the cash

any thoughts??

the easiest way to replace an engine is to drop the entire powertrain. If they did that they would ahve to remove the half shafts. You are not supposed to let them flex any further than 18* or else you can damage the CV joint and boot. Another thing I would be concerned about is if the oil is coming from the differential oil seals. that is FAR worse than the CV boot.

If you can prove they did not remove the engine properly and damaged the CV and diff - they'll have to fix it for you at no cost.

Did you experience any problems there before?  If so, did you have work?  I already mentioned to you about any potential recalls or TSB's

check the level of your transmission fluid.

replacing the diff seals is pretty easy. After you remove the half shafts, the new seals just pop in.

Most of the time when you remove the shafts, the seals get damaged. sometimes a tech will cut a corner by reusing the seals if they look ok.

can you see grease coming from the CV boots or a tear in them? can you tell if its thick like grease or thinner and slicker like trans fluid? color?

Thats the thing... i had NO problems with it befor the engine went. Thats why i think its something they did. I cant imagin it just starting to leak immediatly after with nothing provoking it.

I have checked for recalls and TSBs and have found none.

As for the grease on the rim itself. Its rather think... and black. Looks almost like oil but its too think for that, but its definatly runny. When i 1st say it it looked like paint splatter on my tire.

Ill have to crawl under there after work and see what it up... see what i can see.

check your trans fluid level, oil level, and brake fluid level. they might have torn the caliper piston seal.

definately crawl up under there and see if you can spot the problem. how does the fluid smell?

trans fluid is a dark red so it may appear black. its also very slippery, thicker feeling than engine oil.

She's got a 5 speed so checking fluid lever is kinda dificult.

And if the leaking is only on the tire side of the CV axle that TXFO is on thinking the piston seal or the CV boot(lower). If it is running down the CV axle than its the tranny seal or CV boot(top).

If you start to hear a ticking when turning its the CV axle and the boot got ripped. The CV axle is spent at that point.

Took a good look at it the weekend. At the bottom of the shock there was like a half inch of grease packed on there. Cleaned it all to try to see where it was coming from.
After about 50 miles of driving it looks like its coming from the boot on the CV joint there. Car went in today to get it looked at. Have to wait and see what they tell me. Ill bet money they dont call till late though.. bc they blow.

So... you think i have a good case if it is the boot and it wasnt leaking before the engine replacement?? I just wanna know how far i can push for this. I really dont think that i should be payin :X

glad to hear its covered. Besides, they had to know they did it on the engine job.

BTW, 5 spd level isnt hard to check. let the trans cool off and then remove the fill plug. use your finger to verify the fluid level is right at the bottom of the hole.
