I know these have been an issue, particularly with older model Foci. How can you tell if they're going bad? Signs, symptoms, noises?

Humming scratching sound from rear. If you think its going jack the rear and spinn thewheels. If you hear anything it's probably the bearing. You should know if you hear it when the car is jacked up. It a "that doesn't sound right" sound. There should be no noticable noise when you spin the tire.

Thanks Dan, I'll try that tomorrow. What I've noticed is that the thing is LOUD. It's a humming noise. I thought it was maybe a tire, but they're fairly new. The alignment is good too. It doesn't sound skrunchy, like it's filled with sand instead of grease. Just a loud, continuous hum.

It probably is th ebearing(s). You have over 100K on it right?

If you have a press or access to one you can change them out for about $60

If not your probably looking at a $200 bill.

But that was "closed course" and dosen't count...:D

Have you found hi-speed bearing to replace them are are you still crossing your fingers with the stock ones? Was this on a focus?

the svt focus race car...we have just added that to our inspect/replace list....we do the front bearings several times a year as we found that to be a weak link big time. overheat and break the hub, usually taking the axle with it. been carrying spare spindles and axles to the track for 3 years but had never had a rear go bad. probably because we thought of that on the way to a race weekend. the rear had never been changed and had about 8k race miles on it so it was due. now carry spare rear hubs too. and abs sensors which tend to melt when bearings overheat...luckily it happened on a test day friday, so we were able to round some up by sat. a.m. up side...we can change in a front, loaded spindle and axle in under 20 minutes with hand tools at the track, replace a bent strut in 25 minutes, and do a rear, loaded hub in 10 lol....oh also for any who track foci.....take off center caps for access to the axle nuts...we torque the crap out of them between sessions now....no front failures since we started doing that.

Funny. Chelly has a sound comign from the front pass. side. seemed to start when it hase been warm here and the A/C on. I think it might be wheel bearing but not sure. Those things should last longer than 12K correct?

Oh. And I can change a rear preloaded bearing in 10 minutes also :P. Its just 5 bolts (4 tire and 1 hub)

on track shenanigans..we have learned through trial and error...why did we build a car with no guidelines or precedents!? because hundas are like aholes..everybody, oh you know....and yes under normal conditions, they should go a long way...but, it seems any form of racing, maybe even a/x puts a lot of stree on them. also your roads there may contribute to wear.....where i am, most roads are billiard balls as we get very little snow.....true story..i was instructing for svtoa at vir..on friday night a ford engineer went on about how svt products can go on track right out of the box...after his speech, i pulled him aside and told him of our hub problems hoping for some help...what i got was this.."they do not break"...okay, sunday i am circulating around, and guess what...a hub broke....as i coasted past said engineer into the pits i yelled "another one did not break"! stupid s.o.b.

It's an '02 with 39,000. No worry about the price...I shelled out for the extended warantee with $0 deductible. Unfortunately, I'm in school this week from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM and doing monster homework every night. I have a 10 page paper due by Fri. afternoon., so I won't have time to even peek at these until the weekend.

Sorry. I just realized I got you mixed up with SS. To many poeple and I sufferfrom C.R.S.:D

If it makes you feel better. Others I have heard of that had actually lost the bearings just made that axle sit cricked andthey could barly drive the car. I think one one person had the tire pass them. If you just take it easy you should be fine for even another whole week if need be. If it starts to get really loud than I would start to worry.

Okee Dokee. Had the tires rotated & rebalanced today, and the noise went from back to front. The tire guy, whom I trust, said all the tires looked great and were wearing perfectly...no cupping or feathering. While balancing, he said he noticed there were flat spots on both wheels on the passenger side. The one that's now on the front is worse than the rear. I took a very close look, and can actually see the spot on the left front. Apparently, that's what's making the noise. It hasn't affected the tire, and I can't notice it when driving. It creates no vibration, bouncing, or shaking. Just the noise. It kinda sounds like hum-mum-mum-mum-mum, and increases in speed as the car does.

Anybody got a pair of stock 16's they'd like to sell?
