This is the story of a how to gone wrong. I set out today to replace my rear wheel bearings and in the process make a new how-to. I brought along the camera to capture the process and ended up capturing a nightmare unfolding.

after removing the drum by way of the nut under the dust cap,

I removed the spacer and the snap ring with a set of snap ring pliers. I took the assembly over to the 75 ton press and inserted a press bit. As the bearing was coming out, I heard a loud crack and released the press and went to collect the bearing. This is what I found.

yes thats right. the center of the drum broke off the body. 3/4 of steel just broke off and destroyed everything.

thats the bearing sticking out on one side, and the press bit on the other. they are now permenantly fused in there. Its my new paper weight.

The other side broke too. I tapped the bearing out but the race was fused in there. race is stuck so now I had to buy two new drum, hub, and bearing assemblies. They are 96$ each from Ford and the part number is 2S4Z-1113-AA

copy downt he number because I spent 45 minutes arguing with a partrs guy who swore up and down that there was no such thing as a complete hub and drum assembly.:X then he told me "thsi is all we have". And brought me a God damn rotor.

So here is how to replace your bearings. step one - buy hub and drum assemblies

step 2 - replace drum.

Been there, done that. Sucks doesn't it. Worst part is having a bunch of wrenches around laughing their butts off at your expense.
