Hello SVT types,

I've been driving my '02 ZX3 (Zetec) MTX for about a week now and am already thinking my next Focus should be SVT.

I am wondering what are your observed RPM levels on the highway at such speeds as 60, 70, and 80.  I am seeing about 2950 at 70 and 3250 at 80.  This seems high and I'm wondering how much the 6th gear and additional HP take it down.

Also, what kind of highway mileage are you observing?

Thanks!

Chris

Let me guess, your pervious car was a V6 or better...? 3250 rpm at 80 mph is ballpark for the non SVT ZX3 and that's a pretty fair number for any four cylinder in my experience. Highway mileage varies for me based on climate, weight in the car, and the usual, but I just went on a 500+ mile trip last week and averaged near 32 mpg over the whole trip. I was amazed too. I've hit 30 before, but as I checked the numbers again, it still came out to 31.7 mpg. At more than $2 per gallon, you can color me happy with mpg like that!

yep. I get about 3 grand at 70-75 but I also get 3 the same rpm to speed in my 83 F250 w/ 351w and 4 speed manual.

I get and average of 30-31 in my sedan with 15" rims and avout 27-28 in my ZX3 with 16" rims. I get about 1/3 of that in my truck:D

Just a for-warning that any SVTF you are going to get in the future will be used because they stopped making it. They only made it from 02-04 in case you did not know.

I agree. The rpm's sound about right. I average 32 mpg in varied driving.

wow.
i've never done better than 25mpg.
on 93 octane gas.

then again,
i tend to stay one gear lower than necessary
if i'm in traffic
and trying to move through it
(which seems to be all the time, around here).

now that i've got the CAI and cat-back on there,
i'm averaging closer to 21mpg.

as for RPM's,
i had a '00 ZX3
and was really shocked
at how little the RPM's changed
in my '03 SVT.
in top gear (5th), 3k was between 70 and 75 in the ZX3
and top gear (6th) in the SVT, 3k is between 75 and 80.

I have a 2k2 ZX3 and yes, it's not an SVT, but as Jonny mentioned, his runs about the same.

Mine 3k @ 70mph = best hwy milage to date for me - 34mpg

Like I said, that was the best to date.  I've not beaten that yet nor have I averaged that.  Only strict hwy miles on that tank on cruise

on the svt going 70 is about 3k. its almost the same as the ztec. i previously owend a 01 zx3 and now i have an 04 svt. it is faster and all, but i realy dotn like the 6 speed idea, personally i think it sucks, im gonna look for an svt engine that i can get cheap and drop it in the zx3 with the 5speed. im geussing its gonna be faster than the stock svt.

i think the bottom line for what he's asking is if the sixth gear on the svt gives you lower highway rpm's.  and the answer is no.  the highest gear (6) on the svt tranny isn't any higher than the highest gear (5) on a standard ztec focus.  there's just one more step in between.
