do you think there is enough room to mount one like the STI in the back of the engine bay? I was thinking maybe I could put it there and mold some Datsun Z vents into the hood.

I don't think there will be enough room unless you find a real long skinny intrcooler. What about the heat from the eingine? Do you think that will affect the performance of the intercooler? I'd play it safe and get one that goes behind the bumper cover if it was me looking to do this, but then again, thats just me.

ya, if your gonig for stealth you can still hide the front mount behind a grill.  plus a hood scoop wouldnt look that great, but at least you could tell people that it is functional.

when I find my usb cable, I will post a pic of the STI set up. it has a very small but efficient intercooler placed in the back of the engine bay.

I dont think it would get TOO hot because ots not directly over the engine and if you got a NACA scoop and some vents the airflow thru the bay would be significant. (naca scoops are recessed like the modena, not squirrel habitats like the STI)

the reason I ask is because I am not planning on getting a different bumper for my car. the room to fit a cooler and run pipes is pretty cramped. I dont want to bend the inlet pipe back on itself and under so Im just considering other solutions.

check out the celica all-trac or gt4 and the supercharged 86-89 mr2 setups. There are plenty o' intercoolers good for those type setups.

If you got a WRX sized intercooler it might fit where the old air filter box was located. That space is pretty good sized. I would take some measurements and look online for an intercooler that would fit.
