I have seen many 04 zx3 with color matched side moldings.

I asked my ford dealer about side moldings and he said that they only come black plastic of primed.  I think he is wrong though, you should be able to order them painted.

as for the paintability of the plastic (cause i'm a painter)  it's very VERY unlikely you'll ever get paint to stick in any permanent fashion.  the key is the silicone based plasitc.  paint DOES NOT EVER stick to silicone.  i'm pretty sure nothing will really.  (that's why i get so mad when kitchen installers leave gobs of clear silicone caulking on the walls before they're finished in houses i'm working in)

like t3-rex said; usualy you'd sand them to get a good mechanical bond for a primer coat.  wich he says releases some oil stuff.  in this case you might be better off not sanding and trying to get a chemical bond from a plastic specific primer.  but then again, i think the plastic is probly silicone based and therefore sanding or not sanding will make no difference.  it'll eventually flake off

I painted over mine with some heavy and then lighter sanding.  the paint I used adhered very well (krylon) I used that plastic primer stuff they sell at the autoparts store as well.  I eventually hit a car door with my moulding and it then proceeded to fall off over the next two weeks.  It was a huge thump though LMAO.

I got rid of the molding and put vinyl over where molding was and the holes disappeared.  Thats another option if you just want a small graphic to cover the former molding area, even it is shaped like the molding HAHAHA.

that sounds about right to me.  krylon is great stuff (i used it on my interior trip and it's wonderful)  but nothing seems to stick to that ext. moulding plastic.  you paint was staying on just cause it was dry in the shape of the moulding.  soon as it cracks it all peels off cause it isn't bonded....  it's like ford is messing with us...

No it stuck really well, it held up against power washers and everything,  but I bent my door as well as the molding...  thats when it cracked I took the molding off and used vinyl instead.
