I believe the paint codes are on the inside of your drivers side door or on the sticker under the hood, I don't remember which. As far as how to get them off, I believe that the 00 models have clips on the back that hold the mouldings on. As to how to get them off, maybe zx3-rex could offer up some advice.. I don't think he had the clips.. but mayeb he could point you in the right direction :)

it actually is part of your VIN as well.  All you have to do is call a dealer service dept. rattle off your vin and they'll let you know what color your car is and give you the code.

Here is a VIN decoder I found specifically for Ford Vehicles:

It says fleet vehicles, but hey, give her a try: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/vin_tools/default.asp

As for your side moldings. There are clips and double sided tape holding them on.

Good luck.

As for the color. Look on the labes on the doof jam. It will be a 2 digit code. Example Y7 is Egg Yolk Yellow.

What year is your car?  I have a 2002 and the only thing holding them on was double sided tape.  That stuff is a bastard to peel off.

To get them off start from the upper rear and pull with even pressure.  I you bend them too much they will not go back straight.

If you need any help with the painting steps shoot me a pm and I'll hook ya up with the materials needed and the steps.

Try dental floss. Work it behind the molding, using a "sawing" motion. Just a heads up...lots of folks have tried painting their moldings, but almost no one I know of has been successful at getting the paint to adhere properly. Within a few months to a year, it starts peeling off. I wanted mine to look nice, so I took it to some local body shops, all of whom have excellent reputations, and all of them refused to paint them. I seem to remember a thread that stated painted moldings were available from Ford in most colors.

Yes, it's possible. Read a couple of posts up from your post. In fact, read the whole thread, or do a search for painting trim.

I have an 02 and painted the side moldings last spring and now the paint is starting to flake off.  When you sand the black plastic moldings they release an oil that makes the bond betwen the paint and plastic less than ideal.  Just cough up the cash for the svt moldings and paint them.  They will look better and last alot longer.

My '05 ZX3 doesn't have side moldings and my question is will prior year model moldings fit? I also heard that you can buy them from your Ford dealership already painted to match you car but they were in the $200 range. My previous cars that had side door moldings never kept car from getting dinged up but I'm used to seeing ZX 3's with them. If I decide to put them on, I may still go with black.

See if your dealer has any in stock. Doesn't matter what color. Just hold'em up to tha car & see if they fit.

doesn't even necessarily have to be SVT does it? Didn't some years come with color matched ( I know my '02 sedan has color matched) I don't know if all Z's came with just black though.

I'm not entirely sure how it works, but SVTs got painted, some sedans seemed to have, and I think some ZX5s too... I have no clue on the wagons but it seems to vary across the board whether the car got painted ones or no.

I believe all ZTS sedans (00-04) had painted side moldings. The 2001 S2 ZX3 might have had painted side moldings but I can't remember. My 00 SE soney ed. sedan has painted side moldings. Probably higher end ZX5's had painted side moldings. It seems Ford mixed and matched everything after 02...

As for the 05 model. See if there is a model with side moldings like the ST sedan or the highest ZX3(5) model.
