okay heres the deal, my focus lx has the absolute crappiest wheels on it. the old steel 15x5.5 wheels suck. i was wondering if say, a 16x7 or 17x8 wheel would offer better traction especially in the snow. hell, if u want to suggest some to me. im on a budget though so nothing all fancy. im lookin for more utility than styling. thanks.

A larger diameter rim and wider/larger tires are definitely not going to help traction in winter but will make a big difference in summer handling.  Also, the more weight you add per tire, it may make your car feel more sluggish unless you buy a real lightweight rim.  I think 16x7 and real nice summer tires will do wonders for handling and keep the old rims buy some snows for winter.

If you're on a budget, get some decent 16x7 and a real good performance all season.

When I had my Focus, I really wanted a set of the Velox VX8's.

Here's a link http://www.veloxwheels.us/ second row up from the bottom and third and fourth wheels from the left are the ones I like.  Check out http://www.wheelmax.com they always have packages for sale.

Larger wheels & wider tires will do the exact opposite of what you want. In dry weather, larger contact patches are desirable for traction. When it's wet, (& snow is a form of water), you want narrower tires for less hydroplaning. Skinny tires will bite better when it's slippery.

Heres another wheel question. My focus is @ stock height with the 16x7 w/50's. I've noticed 17x7 w/45's are popular on Foci, if I lower it 1.5" can I put 18x7.5's w/35 in there? or will there be some scraping in hard corners. :?

I would say for sure you will have some rubbing issues with the 18x7.5's.
I you want to drop the car and have a decent ride I'd say look at some 17x7's.

If you end up getting rims.. I wouldn't rock them during the winter... Use your 15"er's to ride out your rough winters, trust me its well worth it..... I know what they are like.. I have a close friend in Renton Wa.
