if i have 17" wheels and matching tires,
and i buy new 18" wheels,
i will have to also buy new tires,
because the tires i have on the 17's will not fit.
true?

That is correct, the 17's will not fit on the 18's. I don't think 18's fit the focus to well, you might have to remove the inner wheel wells to get the clearence you need in the front.

really.
i didn't know the 17's were in there that tight.
that's kind of creepy.

The other thing that you ought to think about is that there are trade offs when you increase wheel size. You might improve cornering but unless you get a very light wheel you'll adverely affect acceleration and braking.
Some of the trucks out there that have gone from 16 or 17 inch wheels to 22" are really not handling well. That's an extreme example but it makes the point.

well,
yeah,
i can see how going +5 or 6
will give you some problems.
;>
in the end,
new wheels
is probably one of the last things i'll do,
considering the $1500-2000 i'd spend on the project
would get me most of the way
to a jackson SC or similar.
i just find the SVT alloy wheels really dull,
and figured if i was going to replace them,
i might as well go ahead and +1 while i was at it,
neh?

regardless of the weight of the wheel, you're still likely to see reduced acceleration, more or less the laws of physics there. Also on an 18" wheel you'll have very very little sidewall, and can easily damage rims if you live in an area that isn't paved every day. A really bumpy ride, and a hard time with straight away acceleration are two other problems you might find. 17" is a great wheel all around. I would say if you just want to get something nicer than the SVT ones, see if you can't do a trade with someone maybe, I know people are always looking for the SVT wheel.
