So I'm not sure how many people heard about me joining the Navy, well now I'm not going. After screwing me around for 2 weeks, they called me up yesterday and told me that there is no way they will take me. A combination of 2 things, which I find completely rediculous: I don't have a high school diploma (I only have a GED) AND I have a charge of simple assault on my record from 3 years ago. NOT ONLY did these people screw me over hard core, they didn't even bother to tell me all of this until after 2 weeks of making me run around New England, getting paper work and also after I had already spent 2 days in Boston taking a full physical and the ASVAB AND on top of that, they confused me with someone else!!!!!!!! I just think that the military is completely messed up. If they are in such a huge need for recruiting people, why the heck do they put people through so much crap?????
Sorry, that's my rant... just a little ticked off.
I'm extremely sorry to hear about all that bull that they put you through Amber. My friend Adam is going through the same thing right now, except he's in Iraq and wanting to leave. He is one of the ones in the 92nd that shipped all of his stuff home and was on his way to the bus to go to the airport on his way to leave and then they told him he had to stay for another 3 months. Then after that they gave him another 120 day extension! So much for him being the best man at my weding! Sorry for the hijacking, but it was kinda related!

That is BS, sorry man, they can be a$$$e$. I don't blame ya 4 not joining, I wouldn't either, guess they won't take me either, I have a GED. Whatever. It sucks about all the trouble u had 2 go through, sorry.
im sorry to hear this.....I cant understand why they wouldnt take you for those reasons....I knew several people who failed the UA at the meps center and they still took them....times they are a changin...
Hon, find another recruiter other than the navy. only thing you should have had to find would be birth certificate, ged, and ss card. What were they saying about the ged? that should have been no problem(unless the job you were looking at was some sort of specialty that required a diploma) and the simple assault can be waivered. sounds more like they didn't want to do a little extra work and spend a little extra time on you to get things right.
I've never heard about a GED being a bar to entry, but I know that the military considers most law violations as a bar to entry.
I've had many young people beg me to give them diversion or something so they wouldn't have a criminal record and could get in the military. I was usually happy to work with them because the military can do a whole lot more to them (and for them) than just putting them on probation or something.
You may want to check out other branches of the military as was suggested and ask them right up front if your GED or your charge will be an issue. I'd just point out that the Coast Guard is also a branch of the military (most people forget that), and they are an excellent organization.
hell they wouldn't take me because they feel I am too old. And I have talked to two recruiters. One in the navy (who was an idiot and gave me all wrong information) and then one for the air force who told me I was too old.
Either try a different recruiter or try a different branch. That was the advice I was given.
hmmm, I wonder why they're so uptight about the GED thing? I've never heard of that before...as for the simple assault...that I understand...this will scar you for any type of law enforcement type postions...that's too bad. I know you wanted to do this.
I wanted to when I was young...still wish I could have, but due to my illness...no one wanted me. I'd say look into it further with another recruiter...find out why they would mention the GED as a hinderance?

the good news is, you found out the military sucks ass before you were comitted to it. IMO, the military is for the 10% of people who feel some strong need to join due to their family or some sick duty trip, and the 90% of people who are unemployed/ broke up/ tired of their town, and have no idea what to do so might as well join. You're better off NOT in the navy.
I have found that TXFO is pretty much right on with what he just said. I know someone that joined because he didnt know what to do, and he just felt like he was rotting in his hometown and partying and doing drugs everyday. He did 5 years in the Air Force. Came back for around 2 years, and felt like he was going down the same road again as he did before he ever signed. So he decided to join the Army, because he knew he would be an Officer and have a higher rank than Sargeants. So now he's back in the Military system, going to fly helicopters. 5 years of active duty, and he couldnt even make a career out of that time. He got life experiences, and traveled extensively, but it didnt do any wonders for his career or future. He had to GO back, for something totally different, in order to have a good career plan. More time to serve. NOW, he is on the duty trip thing that TXFO mentioned. Ironic.
