how the fuck does your car still run wioth a fucking hole in it??! you lost a rod and it still runs? soon enough the crank will jam on the pieces and snap.
thats 3/3 for the number 2 snapping. I wonder if its just coincidence or if there is some mechanical reason number 2 goes...........
dedonis@kans.com <---------KSGerry. he can hook you up with a brand new zetec for 1K. hes a really cool guy and he'd prally be willing to work with you on payment terms if you need it. you would have to swap the windage tray on the engine though and also the clutch and pressure plate. best deal you could find though.
Well I just went out and checked to see if the dipstick looked like yous. Mine is still attached to the block. I pulled out the dipstick to see if there was any oil left in the pan, and there is, although it is a VERY small amount. Then I tried to put the dipstick back in, but it wont go in all the way. It stops at around the last 4 or 6 inches and won't go in any further. There must be a chink of metal or something stopping it from going in.
Oh ya, my car still runs BTW. On 3 cylinders, but it still runs. When I pulled over on the exit ramp, I thought I should move my car outta the way more, and I figured, what the hepp, the motor is already trashed anyway, so I tried to start it. Fired right up. Ficking weird I tell ya, weird.
The hole in my block is on the right side of where the dipstick enters the block. It's about1 or 2 inches by maybe 3 or 4 inches. Same exact place as yours.

TXFO, thanks for the tip. I have found a junkyard motor for 400 beans with 29k on t, so if worse comes to worse, thats the way I will be going. Now that I think of it, this woud be the perfect time to build myself a moror, if only I had something else to drive and the money tobuild a motor. Ya It's weird that it still runs, but I had to start it to move it outta the way. I prolly couldve driven it home if I had the balls. But instead I got a tow cause I didn't wanna risk destroying anything that might be worth salvaging.
I posted my snowmobie online yesterday and some guy emailed me asking if I wanted to treade for a 92 GTI, I gotta check that out and maybe I can drive that for the winter and build my motor, but that's gonna take convincing from the wife. If the GTI is in decent shape, I might do that.

I haven't looked at it too much yet because of the freezing cold temps here and the snow on the ground. I can see that there's a hole in the block and thats about it right now.

Thats the same thing that mine did. I think the pressure from it blowin just bends all that to hell. If you play with it enough it will go back in (had to do that since it was on the new engine).
I cant belive it still runs either... mine sure as hell didnt

Just wondering if this is related to any mods or have these engines that have blown been mainly stock. Its got the AEM alternator UDP, bomz long tube intake, mac shorty header, FC hi flow cat, and a Bosal 2.25" cat back. I also have a BBK 65mm T/B, but thats not on right now, now was it on when the engine blew. No cams, cam gears or anything internal.

Only thing i had on my car was an Iceman Intake... been on for years... it was about as stock as you can get when it blew exactly like Mikes did

Audio, the timing belt has nothing to do with this case. The car still runs. If the car didn't run, then I would be concerned with the timing belt. The car did not jump time, and the belt did not break. I haven't ripped anything apart quite yet, but I'll let you know what happens and what condition the timimg belt is in when I rip into the motor. I had a timing belt slip off the gear when I had my CRX(eh-honda, I know), and the car just suddenly stalled. It ended up bending valves, cracking a few pistons, and cracking the head I think. No rod went through te block though. I'm 99.99% sure it's not the timeing belt in this case.

TXFO, what you said gives me an idea. This motor was hydrolocked about a year and a half ago, but nothing was damaged, or so I thought. What happened is I was driveing to work early one morning and it was still REALLY dark out. I came to the end of my road, and the storm drain was plugged up, causing a huge puddle. I shut the motor off before I hit the puddle, but the enging was still rotating when I hit it. It sucked some water, but I was able to get it running enough to get to the parts store later that day for new plugs. I took all the plugs out and turned it over and tried to get the water out of the motor. When I though I had all of it out, I put the plugs back in and tried to fire it up. Nothing. Pulled the plugs again, got some more water out, reinstalled them again and she fired up. Limped her home and waited for her to dry out. When she was dry I drove her ot the parts store and got some new plugs. Installed them, and everything was back to normal.
Do you think when this happened that it maybe slightly bent a rod or even cracked it and now it just decided to let go? I don't understand why it would take so long to snap, but its a thought. I have beaten the crap outta thi motor on numerious occations, but when this happened, I wasn't. I was casually shifting from 1st to second at about 4 grand when this happened. Thoughts?

Captain J wrote: The rods ARE pretty cheap on these cars. They probably shouldn't have the redline that they do.I guess I'll have to agree from first hand experience. The weird thing was is that mine was at around 4000 rpm between shifts when it let go. I dunno.
