Have you been to the doctor's yet?
You know, you fellas (And ladies) who mess around with illnesses are cruisin' for problems.
Trust me - I'm a survivor of an illness gone terribly wrong.
Feel better soon!

yep, i went to the doc a couple weeks ago for this. started in my head, then down to my chest and stomach, back to the head and throat and feeling totally shitty.
checked me out and found it was a severe sinus infection. popped me with bicillin and nose drops and it cleared in a couple days.
I was at a point i couldn't concentrate on anything but sleep.
may cost some money, but being out of work costs too.
Don't play with your health.
I'm one of those people that doesn't go to the doctor. My immune system is strong, and I don't have health insurance. I did go last summer, though, when I had a fever of 103.7 and felt cold and dizzy. Had some sort of virus. Got a shot and some pills, paid out the ass, and felt better.
I don't go to the doctor unless I am REALLY sick. Or have REALLY good health insurance where I don't pay anything.

Glad to hear you're better. I understand people that don't go to the doc for little stuff if they don't have insurance, cause that gets Real expensive in case you did just have a passing thing. I think a lot of the time people can tell if they're "under the weather" or you realize, hmm my body's def. wrong, should get this checked out.
BUT if I may intrude on the rant a wee bit... do you know what you got for the virus? Doctors that prescribe anitbiotics for viruses Piss me off. A) You're paying for something that will do absolutely nil for you B) They're making it look acceptable and C) Ity contributes to the superbacteria that resist our only line of defense now (drugs) and attack you natural bacteria that keep you from being sick. There's like No medicine a doc should prescribe for a virus, unless you have HIV, or getting something like Sudafed to make you not feel symptoms. Argh!
Well <climbing back on the soap box> I can't say that I agree with anyone who doesn't go to the docs, or stay out of work or have health care, regardless of how healthy you are now. Point being is that right now, the moment, this instant you're fine...but without warning you can be flattened by a catastrophic disease...just like that.
As for Viral medications - In many instances outside of HIV they are needed. I'm a 2 time kidney transplant patient and I've been through it all with medications and surgery etc.. Anti-virals are used initially during the first half year or so of a transplant because the immunosupressives destroy your immune system.
As far as doc's telling you that you have a virus and giving you an anti-biotic, it's actually un-ethical and if you're seeing the right kind of doc they'd send you home with a recommendation to take Tylenol and get plenty of rest and fluids...not give you an anti-biotic.
Diseases in our time are so incredibly resiliant and they are constantly changing and they are out there ready for you....looking for that moment when you've let yourself wear down. Lack of sleep, bad habits, diet, no exercise etc...
Wash your hands and keep your hands away from you face, eyes, nose & mouth.
Avoiding the doctor when you don't feel well is really one of the worst things you can do. That little stomach ache can rapidly become more. I'm not saying that at the slightest onset of diarrhea run to the docs, but if you're not holding down food or water for more than a half hour at a time and all is going right through you...get your ass to a doc's.
I really hate to sound like a bitch and I'm not pointing fingers, but people who think they're young and healthy and basically don't think that insurance is affordable...those bills from the doc's aren't affordable and can ruin you financially. They will take your paycheck, they will take your car, home, and anything else you have. Trust me, my parents fought for years to just keep a roof over their heads.
Prime example of a healthy ox that's been struck hard is Tedy Bruschi of the NE Pats - A stroke and hole in his heart with a wife, 2 kids and he's only 31 - Statistics in the USA = roughly thirty thousand people in the United States, under the age of 45, suffer from strokes each year.
Just take care of yourself, I'm not a germaphobe - those of you who know me know better, but I know what's out there and I've not only battled kidney disease for over 24 years, but I've contracted Salmonella once and E-choli twice! Not to mention the dozens of other infections I've had to stave off.

Yeah Chelly, transplants and such fell in the HIV category I think. It's more like "I didn't feel well, I had the common cold, my doc gave me antibiotics" that I was soapboxing against. Which, in 1998, 18 million prescriptions were written for such an application, 100% unnecessary. As far as I know too, correct me if I'm wrong, the antivirals were/(are?) more "virostatic" than "virocidal"... they helped your weakened system from getting viruses more so than killing off ones you'd already contracted? That's my guess, but from personal experience you probably are more certain.
And I don't know how it feels to make a decision without health insurance, I just sorta meant that there are those people who run to the Docs for Every little thing, and if you don't have insurance that's obviously a real dumb thing to do (not that it isn't superfluous even if you do just have the copay...)
Anyway that's it. And so all know, the single most effective method of ridding yourself of potentially pathogenic bacteria is just Washing Your Hands... with plain old soap not the fancy kinds with Triclosan in them. That's it, we can all do that!

I agree 100%. All of us know to cover out mouths when we sneeze or cough, but it's not the best idea to cover them with your hands. When you sneeze, try to remember to cover your mouth & nose by sneezing into the crook of your arm by your elbow. Your shoulder is another good place. Remember, your hands touch everything.
When washing, keep your fingers pointed down & try not to touch the edge of the sink, especially when rinsing. Drying with paper towels is better than using a cotton towel. Paper towels are not sterile, but they're pretty darn good. When I wash, I let the water run while I'm drying my hands. I then use the paper towel to turn off the faucet. People with dirty hands, touch the faucet 1st. It's one of the most infectious places there is.

Interesting about the anti-biotic. I'll have to remember that!
As for insurance, it's not that I can't afford it, I am simply not eligible. My job is a real bitch about insurance. If you miss any days of work, at all, for any reason, you're not eligible for 6 months without missing a day. ###### asswipes.
As for hand-washing... I try to keep my hands clean, but it's hard when dealing with money as often as I do. I wash my hands before I eat and after using the restroom, but that's about as good as it gets.
