OK, here's number I. I ranted about this about 6 months ago:
So there I was, minding my own business as usual, when all of a sudden I get a postcard asking me if I wanted to participate in a class action lawsuit. It was filed by some folks I never heard of, against Progressive Insurance for alleged over-billing. Well, I wasn't busy, the promise of untold riches stirred my imagination, so I went on line and said, "Sure!" I figured that'd be the last I ever hear of the matter.
SScchhaazzzzaaaammmm! From out of nowhere came my friendly postal service carrier, with a smallish, folded postcard with my name on it. I fevereshly tore it open, (nearly injuring myself in the process), and read that we had one the suit. YYYYEEEEEHHHhhhaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh! Now I can get that Aston DB9 I've been dreaming about. I can take my wife on a cruise around the world. I can retire. I can pay for my grandchildrens college expenses. Surely cleaning ladies, chefs, gardeners, and butlers are in my future. Maybe even a summer place on the Riveria.
Hey! I don't mind telling you, by this time, my palms were really sweaty.
The details of the settlement began to be revealed as I breathlessly read on. First and foremost, Progressive Insurance admitted absolutely NO wrong-doing of any sort. (well natch) Second, the intrepid, skillfull, brave, selfless, tireless attorneys, who fought the good fight to win this settlement for the little guys that were ruthlessly abused by this industry giant are to be paid $4,500,000. Third was the "little guys" settlement, which was...........................................
One free credit report from the reporting agency of our choice.
That DB9 might just have to wait until next year. Ummm hummm.
Here comes Number II.
Another class action suit settlement came today. Two years ago, I bought my wife a New Beatle Conv. as a surprise for her birthday. Well, it seems that the dealer placed a $97.50 charge on the invoice for some kind of dealer overhead, that was non-negotiable. Somebody got pissed & sued'em. I'm part of the class, so here's the settlement:
Because I got ripped off for $97.50, the dealer will write me a check for $19.50. Now, I gotta tell ya, I wouldn't mind having 20 bucks, but still feeling that somehow, I still got the short end of the stick, I kept reading. I finally got to the lawyers settlement. Yep! you guessed it. They're getting $1, 250,000.
Well........I guess that's justice, huh?

All of this lawyer's fees and settlement money from these damned frivolous law suits causes OUR pockets to empty even more because of the increase in costs for these companies and those like them, to carry insurance and pay for these damned lawyers.
Oooh, really burns my buns!

And Mr V, sorry you got all into the idea of the settlement, but that's lawyers I guess. I'm with Chelly, the damn jerks driving up the cost of thigns with frivolous suits (I'm not saying yours, but there's a ton out there), also I know some perfectly decent good lawyers, but I feel they're in a minority.
Anyone ever read the King of Torts by Grisham? This stuff always reminds me of that book.
I'm about to join a class action lawsuit against Hypercom for misstating their earnings for last year and causing their stock to drop 18% when they stated their correction. I just gotta figure out which of the sharks I wanna deal with. Stinkin miserable lawyers. I've never met one that I envy.

Hopefully not much. They've been a good stock for me. The week after their loss they gained back 10% so when they lose it'll be a good time to buy. They have pretty solid business and a promising future. They deal with point of sale technology. I've done round trip trades with them 6 or 7 times.
