clear, starry, 2am (this morning as a matter of fact). doing 75 on a 2 lane hway and watching for deer. crossed a small bridge and about 100yds later i spot a racoon in my lane. it,s in the lane going for the shoulder and i swerved into the oncoming lane to avoid it further. to say the least, the coon no longer has suicidal tendancies. it turned around and ran in front of me and i had nowhere to go. caught it with the passenger side corner and tire, then under the car and again with the rear tire. she lived long enough to crawl off the road. after getting stopped i checked the car enough to find it was drivable.

but, tomorrow its into the shop to be thoroughly checked. damage i can find so far is...

alignment is shot, can tell since the steering wheel is off center (just had a 4 wheel done a couple weeks ago).

plastic fender liner is several pieces held together by something

deep scratches in the bumper and missing paint (lower corner just ahead of the front tire).

and i have to have the tire redone since i evidentily broke the bead and it resealed itself. thats an easy one to figure out since there is fur stuck in the bead.

just wondering what else they'll find tomorrow.so far the tally is 80 for align, 40 for the fenderwell, and 15 to have to tire done. oh, and the front tire now has some camber to it and hoping i didn't bend the strut or something. hoping it doesn't start climbing from there. and no, insurance won't do a thing since my deductible is  1k.

one thing i can say is i'm glad it wasn't a deer.

Jeez, what a bummer. Thankfully, you're all right. Cars, they can fix. Bodies...well, they're harder.

 Poor Car, poor Racoon :(

This is exactly why I don't like driving at highway speeds in country type settings (2 lane highways). We have loads of them here.

Sorry about the damage man.

well, ended up not being as bad as i thought...

alignment was shot both front and rear, tire had to be redone, fenderliner was ordered, but the deep scratches and paint will have to wait awhile to be fixed. thought i'd post a pic. cant really see the scratches since theres an angle to the pic but it does show alot.

That does suck....

It seems that that racoon was tought how to run in traffic from squirells and chipmunks.. They always double back on traffic.

I'm glad it wasn't as bad as you thought. It always surpirses me how much damage hitting a relatively small animal can do.

Hmph - this from a guy who backed up over a chipmunk in a dirt driveway while not even going a speed that would register.

Chipmunks are stupid except when it comes to getting into your food!

The last house we had backed up to some woods, and we had chipmunks out the wazoo. Man...are they tough to get rid of.
