its only been 6 days that Ive been jobless and Im already disenfranchised with the whole thing. Ive been busting my ass in frot of the computer all week. Ive written multiple tailor made versions of my resume and written god knows how many custom cover letters, damn good ones too. Ive called lots of people and exchanged emails with everyone but the pope. So far Ive only had one interview and I had to turn them down. (bad feeling about the place) I cant seem to make any progress in the direction I want to go and cant even get an employer to call me back. Every time the phone rings I run to the caller id and pray. then it turns out to be my brother or a friend from my old job. :? I have to drive all over town because some employers want you to apply in person. Their offices are invariable downtown or just plain far from me, and of course they only take aps from 8-10 every other tuesday. :chair Im already sick of looking for work. Ive worked exhaustively and I've had it. I know, it looks lame to say you are disenfranchised after only one week but hey, Im putting in 40 hours and way more actual work than I ever did at motorola and Im not gettinga check for it. Then I get calls from unemployment telling me I have to go to some workshop at 730am next week or else I dont get to collect. (which I still may not since Motorola will probablly appeal) jesus christ, I've been on unemployment before, I know how the fuck it works. Then there is the Lonestar and WIC paperwork. These agencys THRIVE on paperwork and personal appointments. I cant just DL the paperwork and fax it in, no I have to make an appointment and bring it in in person. ;monkey I filed to get my retirement disbursment but due to Motorola holding up the process, I cant get my pension pay out untill aug. 23. thanks alot ya bastids. And I'm STILL trying to file an appeal to my termination!!!!! thats a whole 'nother mess entirely.  :caution

Here is what I did everyday for 9 months of unemployment:

10:00 AM: Wake Up
10:30 AM: Shower
11:00 AM: Food (Ramen)
12:00 PM: Hit up Monster/HotJobs/Dice, send out resumes to jobs that look appealing
1:30 PM: Go to convenience store and get daily papers
2:30PM: After circling jobs, do research and type up cover letters, print out letters and resumes, pack into envelopes, address, and stamp. Realize at this time that I don't have stamps, so bitch and complain, and go back to cnvenience store to get stamps.
5:00 PM: Head back to convenience store for a 2nd time to pick up a 40oz. and 6-pack
6:00 PM: Head over to friend's house to hang there, check e-mail remotely for any hits, and perhaps play some sort of video games
10:30 PM: Arrive home, proceed to drink and either A: Watch a movie (or series of movies) B: Play my guitar and learn a new song or 10, or C: Do some programming or D: call neighbors and see who wants to hang out and drink, or E: video games while drinking.
2:30 AM - 5:00 AM: Pass out somewhere in my apartment

I always somehow kept busy.  I also poured alot of effort into finding a job.  In the end, I probably sent out over 200+ resumes within that 9-month span, and really did not catch anything.  Fortunately now I'm employed, have been for over 2 years now, so all is good.

However, I am trying to find another day job.

yeah it's damn hard trying to find a job. In my field (tv) it's damn near impossible cause they always want at least 2 years experience for an ENTRY level possition. Well it's relly hard to get experience if no one will hire you. I'm lucky my dad owns his own company cause I work for him while I look for a job just so I can pay the bills otherwise i'd be even more broke than I am. I graduated college in December. 85% job placement my ass.

Good luck with the hunt

my topics dont get any response here so I said F it. :?

but I did come here to post the news. :) Im giving up on the job search after only a week. I will use my contacts to procure a part time job at an auto parts store and then use my retirement and pension money plus my wife's DAV money to hold down the fort while I enroll in community college (spring, too late for fall) to get my ASE certs and an AA in auto repair and body work. I havent had any luck getting an entry level mechanic assistant job so Im going the long route and taking the 2 year program at palo alto. After I get out, I shouldnt have a problem getting a job in the field and then I will work on becoming a master tech and then opening my own shop in San Antonio.

An interesting bit of info I just found out that Motorola Seguin is scared shitless of me and they are running around trying to get statements to back up the claims they made in my termination meeting. I guess they think they can retroactively slide those into my file and it will all be ok. What they didnt count on is that a few of my friends hate the company as much as I do and have agreed to write counter statements detailing what they are doing now and that these statements were not taken prior to my dismissal. Also, a number of my collegues told HR to fuck off and refused to write statements against me.:fu

The best part is that I dont care. They are circling the wagons and frantically trying to cover their asses. Little do they know that I dont want my job back and the only reason I am appealing is to make them sweat. I jsut wnat to show them that Im not one of the local yokel Mexicans that they can just jerk around and forget about. Im not going away that easily. :driv

Congrats on your plans! Good luck!

Well maybe the Motorola wagon-circling will give you a small settlement, to pad the nest egg while you're at school and starting up on your new journey in mechanics. That'd be a nice touch of them, and way better than giving you a desk job back :)

figures. As soon as I decide to drop out of the race and go back to school, I start getting calls for interviews. :X FUCK!! I dont have enough balls to turn them down out of hand so now I have to go and interview. With any luck they wont hire me. Im going to have to concentrate on turning in applications at places that arent hiring. (I have to keep turning in aps so I can collect unemployment) Sucks the job I have an interview for sounds like a decent job but the hours are rigid and probablly wont allow me to go to school. :? Shit, I cant go untill spring anyways. I guess if they offer me the job, I'll take it and work untill spring. save the money I have, and then quit so I can go to school.

Life sure has a sick sense of humor sometimes... a very dry, ironic sense.

May as well go see what they're all about, it certainly can't hurt. Could you take night classes for the school in Spring? Cause in that case a rigid schedule could be helpful, because you can count on it to stay the same, not be called in at random times when you're in class or something?

What about taking classes online? There are thousands of choices from certified, legit universities. These hours can transfer virtually anywhere. You won't get any hands-on stuff, but you could get the academics out of the way, and work at your convenience.

If it were me, I'd take the offers of interviews/jobs seriously. That way, I could pay the rent & study for what I really wanna do at the same time.

some of the classes can be taken at night or online but all the hands on auto shop classes are only during the day.

Im going to the interview tomorrow and of course I will give it my best shot. If I get it then I will work untill next fall and save up alot of money. Then I will angle for part time work or outright quit so I can go to school. Thats really what I want to do and Im gonna do it. But hell, since I got fired from my last job thats kind of a strike against me. Maybe they wont offer me a jobor else the money or benefits will suck. ;)

Is therea thread about why you got let go?  If you are under 32 try joining the military.  Regardless of beliefs its the best damn job around in my opinion.  Besides they pay for school, health care, dental, Housing all on top of base pay.  PLUS its a great way to network into a job you like.  Im not recruiting in any shape or form....Im just telling you from a factual real life situation if you are in a bind....and need a job now and are physically healthy and have a diploma/GED its the best job running.

uh......... I'd rather stab myself in the face. :P

I got fired for sticking up for our cutomer. They have requirements Motorola has to follow in order to do bussiness with them and bid on new contracts. They call this the chrysler forever requirements. The biggest part of it is that we have to follow the procedures that Chrysler signed off their approval on. If at any time we want to deviate from the approved procedures, we have to call Chrysler and get their approval FIRST. My boss and his boss wanted to violate the scrap procedure and move a bunch of units out of scrap and put them back into production for no other reason than to keep the scrap cost down. They had no regard for the quality of the products being sent to Chrysler and our other customers Cummins and Detroit Diesel. I told them I would not look at those units nor would I unscrap them because the relevant work instruction tells me not to do that. (We are taught from day one to always follow the work instructions.) I pointed out the chrysler forever requirements and told them they would have to change the work instruction and get Chrysler's approval first. They didnt like that so when I scrapped all the units as per the work instruction, they accused me of "willfull spoilage" and also hostile work environment. They had no proof of hostile work environment and no formal complaints against me had ever been lodged. The willfull spoilage couldnt even happen because they went over my head and unscrapped the units and sent them back into production. Therefor, there was no actual scrap cost incurred and no "spoilage". And thats disregarding the fact that I was following our written and approved work instructions. So basically, I got fired for being an obstacle on their path to producing shody products and disappointing their customers. :wave

In other news. I went to my interview this morning and the guy wasnt there. He missed his flight or something so now I have to sit around the house and wait for him to reschedule with me. I had planned onworking on my car today, guess thats out the window now. :X

Kids, let this be a lesson to all of you. Stay in school, get SKILL TRAINING!

It took me 2 days of half-assed job searching to get my residential electrician position. Why? Because I went back to school and got a year of training. Take the initiative and get back into school and learn how to do something.

In our world today, employers will hire whoever will work the hardest for the least amount of money. Our entry-level jobs are being sent overseas, or given to people who will work them for minimum wage and no benefits.

So it is imperitive that you learn a skill. Make yourself that much harder to replace. Learn everything you fucking can and strive to be the best. THAT is JOB SECURITY.

Sorry it's hard for you to find a job.

What is your BSEE for? I know a guy who has a degree in "Computer Punchcard Programming"... which is completely useless now. Anyone here have a punchcard computer?

It's hard to switch professions... but hey if that's what you're set on doing, more power to you.

I'd report your previous employer to Chrysler. Possibly you could get retribution? Maybe sue for wrongful termination? I dunno. That's a screwed up situation.

I'm not so sure I'd do that. You could end up with a reputation as a whistle blower. You'd play hell getting a job then.

Retribution. IMO, not likely.

I cant sue for wrongfull termination because Texas is an At-will state. I can only sue if I was fired for being whistle blower, discrimination, or if I refused to do something unsafe.

BSEE = Bachelors of science, Electrical Engineering.

I was going to call Chrysler but my friend who still works there is calling them for me. Hes tired of their shit and hes dropping the dime on em. ;devil
