I just get so upset thinking of all of the animals left behind. The owners that didn't take them, and those who couldn't take them with.
Nobody (well not enough at least!) is doing anything for these poor babies! They can't help themselves!!!
vvv turn on your speakers if you watch this

Our local TV news had an sound bite about this tonight. They also offered some pets for adoption from the Katrina devasted area, so somebody is taking some action. I agree this is an awful situation. I believe that anybody who left their pet(s) behind did so because they had to. Those helicopter pilots, rescue boats, busses, etc. had no room for anything but humans.

Mr. V, I do agree with you to some extent.
BUT I also know that they had advanced warning, time to get out before hand! nobody stopped them from leaving and taking their families (pets included) to safety!

The animal situation is almost every bit as bad as the people one I think. I mean the animals have no choice, no rational thought, all they know is their families are gone and they don't know why or where they could be. Poor pets...

I saw something on the local news a few days ago about adoption too... they showed some workers trying to coax a pair of dogs out from under a porch. They were hunched in a corner and terrified, they finally convinced one dog to come along and the other slipped out and ran away. It was so sad to see them so scared and alone.

As for doing something, I know it's not much, but one of my bets friends used to live down in Gainesville, FL and her roommate and her worked at the local ASPCA. Well she's back in RI, but Jessie was down in FL, she's over in NOLA with some animal agency trying to collect the animals and feed them, get them homes, etc... so I thought that was nice, I hope they have a lot of support:(

I agree. Some people won't leave no matter what. You could tell them a nuclear bomb was going to explode in their neighborhood within the next 12 hours, and some would still decide to "ride it out."

I know that Animal Planet.com has set up a way to send donations for these poor dears.

I know that Mack would be the first thing next to my medicine that I'd take out of my home if I had to leave for a reason like this.

It is difficult...I know that at the superdome when ppl. showed up with some of their pets they were told that they couldn't come in with them and they just let them go.  I couldn't...no way no how.

I was also watching good morning America one morning last week and one of the volunteer rescue people down there said that the human and animal bodies that are just around, floating or just there lying dead have had animals feeding off of them.  It's very bad and disease in animals is going to be just as much of an epidemic as the human diseases.  These animals are drinking this water because they don't know any better.  Many will die of heart worm and other bacterial infections that will kill them and possibly spread to humans.

There's no way to win in such a tragedy like this.  Katrina really kicked our @$$@$.

Well Dan can fend for himself ;)

I feel the same as Chelly though, If i had to evacuate Franklin would be the 1st thing that I would grab on my way out, he is the most important to me. I couldnt imagin leaving him to fend for himself with a disaster coming like that. I would die knowing what he was going through while i was in a hotel somewhere. And as for the people showing up at the superdome with pets who couldnt take them in, that would have  been fine by me, i would have just walked away and found a way to deal with the storm with Franklin my by side. Then again, when i heard it was going to be bad i probably would have run my ass out of town to make sure that my pup was alright. If it was just me things wouldbe different, but i have taken Franklin on as my own and I have to do everything to make sure he is safe and happy.

This doesnt just go for natural disasters either. Bill and I already know that if there is a fire or anything, he grabs his son and I grab mine. Hell, in our last apt the fire alarms went off my first reaction was Franklin, his was John (once he actually figured out whats was going on... being deaf isnt a good thing). Outside we went, him holding John all wrapped up in a blanket (this was Jan or something), and me out there with Franklin... all wrapped up as well.

Yep, Between having Rajah and Mack in the same condo over the past 2 years I've had plenty of practice with Fire Alarms and getting myself and the dog(s) out.  His leash is right next to the door so are my shoes...Out I go w/ dog in tow!:gofast

And yes, Dan's a big boy, he'd be right there beside me with the dog food container and heart worm pills! ;hysterical
