asked about this on the NE-SVTOA mailing list,
and i can already see some of the same faces over here,
but i thought i'd ask over here anyway.

the traction control on the SVTf never turns off.
i don't particularly care much about it as a performance hit,
i don't race my car in any serious way,
and much more enjoy my performance in commuter traffic
than off the line anyway,
but,
the new england winters dish up some pretty slick roads,
and ironically,
the traction control makes it worse, not better,
despite being part of the "winter package"
(all the power goes to a single front wheel
and the car goes 89 degrees to the right,
instead of straight).

anyone know of something more elegant
than removing the fuse
(like possibly an ECU flash)
to alter the behavior of the traction control?

Still not sure about anything other than removing the fuse. I remember a ways back, someone was talking about making some kind of toggle switch that would end up completely disabling it, but I havent heard anything about that in ages.

In the winter time, I dont really drive it in the snow. But if I have to, and come across slippery/slushy conditions, I just start out in 2nd gear. Its an old trick lol, and helps cuz there isnt so much torque and wheel spin off the line.

my SVTf is my only car, so if i have to go out, i have to go out. there is one particular grade near my house, it can't be more than 10%, maybe 15%, but its like a mile long. if you can get up enough momentum before you get there, you're fine, but for some reason during one storm i slowed way down, and ended up stuck 1/2 up the hill because the TC was kicking in so hard it was routing all the power to just the right tire and i was literally going sideways. that was true in 1st or 2nd gear.

since i'm looking for a solution for winter driving, not for racing, disabling the ABS during a storm and slippery conditions seems like a bad, bad idea to me.

I assume you have the conti sport wheels, they are great on dry pavement but not so good in the snow.  Snow tires are great and would help out alot.  It's a PITA to have to switch the tires on and off the rims, but the stock 16" rims will fit the svtf and you could fined a set for cheap.

Yeah, snow tires will help. But you gotta remember, its an open differential, not a Limited Slip. One wheel spin is all ya gunna git lol ;) You could always buy the Phantom Gear thing, or get a full Limited Slip diff from Quaife.

unfortunately,
the early discussion
of a chip fix got abandoned
for happiness at pulling the fuse.
;>
but thanks.

yeah,
i -really- don't like that whole fuse cutting approach.
maybe its just the stubborn computer programmer in me
but my brain is screaming
"its a computer making it do the wrong thing
why can't someone get in there
and make the computer do the -right- thing!!!"

I think Superchips Custom is coming out with something to remedy this problem through the computer.

at the auto-cross event,
someone was doggedly trying to convince me
that the traction-control enabled SVTf
does in fact have a limited slip.
since they worked at a dealership,
i was hard-pressed to argue with them at the time.
google isn't helping on this.
also,
the same guy -insisted-
that i've been interpreting the center console button
completely backwards.
he claimed
that when you push the button,
and the dash light turns on,
this means the TC is -not- engaged,
because the intent of the light
is to indicate when the tires are slipping.
he backed this up by pointing out
that when you have the TC on,
and your tires start to slip,
the light blinks on and off
as the TC battles to make them -stop- spinning,
and that when it succeeds, the light goes out.

i haven't been able to start the car
from a dead stop
with few enough people around
to push the button,
rev up to 6000 and drop the clutch to find out
whether he was full of it or not.

if the TC doesn't have a limited slip,
how does it work?
i thought the whole point
was to transfer power from one wheel to the other
based on which one was getting traction or not?

I'm not sure about the options on the SVT so much as the ZX3's, but this is EXACTLY why I chose a car built WITHOUT ABS or Traction control.  Hate that computer deciding for me what's good and bad on the roads.
I've driven rear wheel drive cars my whole life in New England Winters and the past 3 in a FWD Focus.

yeah,
i'm following that thread.
i was just really confused
to get some information
from someone who should know what they're talking about
that's dead backwards
to what everyone else has told me.

i'm thrilled about the idea
of DIY electronics in my fuse box,
but its better than reaching in with plyers
before every race.

When you hit the button and light the comes on, T/C is disengaged. But not really, because its still active up to 20 MPH, which is why the light will blink anyway till you hit 21 MPH.

Superchips Custom is doing SVT reflashes now. Don from the NE-SVT club did it. But I havent seen him around lately. Maybe I'll try to get ahold of him through the club and get him back on here to fill us in.

they were going to be my vendor of choice.

what i really need
is to get my car on Tuner Transformations
and just get them to do all this shizzle for me.
;>

(random aside, the preview and send links have stopped working in Firefox out of the clear blue, today.)
