check the ballast or have someone check the ballast before you buy new caps. hid caps rarely blow, they are made to outlast unless handled/treated wrong. sometimes if the ballast gets some water it will never work again. been there done that

Just speculating here. I wonder how much longer HIDs are going to be around. I think they might be replaced in the forseeable future by LEDs. LEDs can be brighter, much cooler, take much less energy to operate, and last virtually forever.

Your thoughts????

Not sure about the LED route but it is possible. I don't think it will happen untill most cars start to come with LED lails and markers stock.

HIDs on the other hand are now being sold on eBay for fairly cheam and I believe they are designed to fit into the stock headlight housings. Kinda like a replacement for the H4 bulb.

just goes to show some new users out there actually read thru the forums to see whats been asked and to research any issues they might have. and just cause some of us dont own foci any longer, doesnt mean we might still be around or know an answer or know where to lead someone who asks.

welcome tomba. as far as i could remember, dealer always wanted big bucks for the SVT HIDs, whether it be the caps, ballasts, or whole asemblies. any after market bulb/ballast combo or individual piece that is the D2S size will work, however the color (i.e. 6K) may be different than the stock color.

mr versatile, very good point. the LEDs are definately coming about, especially for the truckers, havin all the cool bright lights on their rigs, but as far as bightness goes inside a housing and using smaller LED diodes (maybe different for a headlight, i havent experimented yet), i put LED bulbs in for replacements for all my turn signals, clearance markers, reverse lights, etc...did a lot of research beforehand and learned that LEDs show their best amount of light while behind the same color lens (i.e. reverse lights are white LED behind a clear lens, turn signals are amber LED behind and amber lens). while putting them in and comparing/contrasting (in this case, not saying it would be the same for headlights), the regular filament bulbs are brighter, BUT the LEDs have an extremely defined and true color to them. ive been meaning to try one in my reverse spotlamps (H3 bulbs) but havent got around to it yet.(all of the above -->my ;2cents)

I wouldn't do that for 2 reasons:

1. You'll either blow the fuse, overheat the wires and start a fire, or both.

2. They're illegal for on-road use. Normal hi-beams are 55's. With the new lights your lo-beams will be 70's.

Sure, you might be able to light up previously unseen portions of the moon, but not without problems.
