so,
on saturday i got my 3k maintenance,
and had them rotate and balance the tires.
ever since,
the car's been vibrating a high-end highway speeds.
so,
i took it back this morning,
and they put it on the road force balancer.
after 2 hours they inform me that 3 of my rims are bent.
they then quote me $900 for 3 SVT rims
(which we all know fordracing.com sells for much less).
i'm a bit confused about this,
since i didn't notice the problem until they were rotated,
i don't recall hitting anything big enough to bend them,
and the fact that they're clearly trying to hose me
on the price of the new rims.
then,
driving the car home,
i pushed it to extremely illegal speeds
and didn't experience any of the shaking
that i had since getting it back on saturday
(considering it had just been road force balanced,
one would hope so, but still).
now,
i don't like the stock SVTf rims,
so i had plans to replace them "someday" anyway.
but,
i took the car to a Tire shop before going to work
(this all started at 6:30am)
to see if they'd verify that the rims were bent.
they claimed they'd have to do the same road force test
which would cost me $120
(Tasca did the first one on warranty).
so.
do i get the second test done?
do i just replace the rims?
if you have to run the car on a test
just to even notice the lack of true,
is that really "bent" and do i care enough to replace them?
obviously,
if i do,
i'll buy the rims myself and get someone to install them,
rather than ordering the $300 a piece ones
the dealer was trying to sell me.

You said that you took the car to Tasca to have them check the tires right. The one in Seekonk or the one in Cranston?
I have had nothing but great experiences with the Tasca dealerships (haven't been to the one in Cranston yet). They have always been helpful, I never felt like they were trying to force things on me I didn't need. If they said your wheels were bent it's a good chance that they are bent.
I'm not saying don't get a second opinion but Tasca has never tried to screw me.

I'm not sure what a dealer would say, but sometimes it's nice to check to see if they can check for "true" on rims.
another thing roadforcing can show is that the tires themselves may have a "hard spot" where either you may have had the car sitting for some time, squealed around a corner, did a burn out, etc - not saying you've done any of this, but there are many factors to getting a bad roadforce.
Oh - BTW tell them to get themselves bent if they think you're going to pay $900 for SVTF Rims. That's flat out price gouging!
We had someone in here once that could offer us SVTF rims for $110 ea. Keep looking!

well,
i did have one fairly ugly skid
during my autocross day
which may have flat sided some of the tires.
(*blush* downside of having to loose the ABS
when you dis-engage the traction control)
what i can't figure out is this:
the tech says
"you have 3 bent rims,
they're so bent
you can see the way the tire changes shape."
if that's true,
why didn't they flag this
when i got them balanced and rotated on saturday?!
which is why i want a second shop to take a look.
there's another small shop nearby
and i think i'll go in
and not mention anything else,
just ask them what they'd charge me
to examine my rims for mis-shaping.
wow,
$110 is really cheap.
the fordracing site lists them for $165 i think,
whereas my dealer's trying to get $300.
yikes.

I know batinc.net has the SVT rims cheap. They have the stock Silver ones for $125. They also have White for $150, Black for $150, and Chrome for $250.
Maybe you should just get new rims, and use the old ones for the Winter
Interesting they would say you can see that the TIRE is out of shape.
This would make me question the tire more than the rim. Unfortunately, some tires aren't built to specs and some slip through. There may be a bad belt or some other reason.
Can you see the bend in the rim? If it's as bad as being visual, then I would say you should be able to see it.
I've had some bent rims brother and let me tell you...with these Ford rims you can see it!

conveniently for them,
the damage is on the inside,
which means i can't see it
without getting the car up on a lift somwhere.

at first my brain,
when they told me,
went
"sweet! now i can justify prettier rims,
and i'll just use these to race on"
and then the other part of my brain
went
"dude, you're going to -race- on -bent rims- ?!?!"
but yeah,
tha's a good call.
maybe put winter tires on the bent rims,
since i'd never go very fast on them anway.

i'm having no luck
finding someone willing to give me a second opinion
on whether or not the rims need replacing.
i'm tempted to get something in stainless or chrome,
even though they're so much heavier,
just to ensure they're stronger
and this doesn't happen again...

Hey, have you looked around on E-bay or other online auctions?
Even other boards to see if anyone is selling rims?
Don't give up...you'll find someone. I'd really question the tires myself.
Do you not have a Pep Boys in your area? I know I know...everyone thinks rice, but I had a great experience locally where with the Manchester Pep Boys. They were the only ones who would put my TireRack bought tires on my FREE (won on MFF.com) Rims. They were reasonable and didn't ruin my rims and didn't charge me extra because they were Z rated tires on 17's etc. They're difficult to put on, but not impossible. Heck, Dan put his own on with my Father's help.
Keep on looking and as I said, There has to be some ethical help out there for you.

i'm sure i can find someone to do the work
of replacing the parts at a reasonable price.
what i can't find
is someone willing to verify
that the parts need replacing.
if they do need replacing,
there's a family (non-franchise) tire shop
just up the road from me,
and i'll definitely throw them the business if i can.

i find the default SVT rims ugly as sin,
and wouldn't bother to get replacements, anyway.
i'd go with either black or white.
probably rally spokes.
