My neighbor has an 01 ZX3 and wants to ditch the drums and go with disks in the rear.  How much of a pain in the arse is that going to be? Also, what is the most cost-effective way to go about it?  He's just going for a stock look.

major PITA typically.

About the only way to do it is to get a kit from somewhere, or pray you can find one of the few models that had ABS on something other than an SVT, I think only the ZTS had that option, I'm not sure.  There just weren't many Focus with rear discs to begin with, really isn't all that needed either.  You can get a better brake setup, by getting an SVT brake kit which gives you larger diameter front brakes, AND rear disc brakes, but the kit isn't cheap, but it is all inclusive of everything you need.

One note however, is that Stock 15" wheels will not clear the front calipers on this type of a setup.

It won't stop any better. It's very expensive and all he'd be gaining is cosmetics. If it were me, I'd wire brush the drums, paint them flat black, and hope nobody notices.

Maybe paint some slots and drill-holes.  I'll let him know what the general outcome is of this thread.
