Ok some of you southerners may not have this.:D:D

On really cold days I get a whining sound and beleve it is the PS pump. It gets louder as I turn the wheel. It only does it in the morning, not a lunch time or at 5pm on my way home. It sits all day in a cold cement parkign garage and at night outside at home. The odo reads 82K.

Question is. Is this the PS pump? Does anyone know? If so could it be low or have bad fluid needing to be changed.

I'm not to worried about it but it looks as if I am going to be keeping this car longer than planned. No one seems to want to buy it.

I get sort of a squeeky sound from mine when I'm turning it on occasion, I can hear it working harder if it's cold outside, but the squeeky sound can be hard just about every time I pull into a parking space. Doesn't help that I think I beat on it autocrossing.

It could be the pump, maybe the fluid, (low or needs changing), or possibly a slipping belt.

If you can get it done, or know how to do it, you can flush the power steering system with Amsoil Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. It will work much better than the normal fluid you use and it exceeds the requirements. Being a full synthetic it will work and flow much much better in the cold climate.

That being said, it could be as simple as just needing to add some fluid. I would think, not to knock any of the other suggestions, that if it were a belt the noise would be occuring with more than just cold weather or a turn of the wheel. Anythings possible, just my two cents worth.

Have you noticed that the PS fluid is at all low? I remember when I had my first focus which was a 2002.. I started to hear the squeaks that you are describing. And just liek you, i only noticed it when the weather was cold and more often than not, it happened in the mornings. I kept an eye on my PS fluid and sure as hell it kept dropping. Come to find out the PS pump had gone. Grantid it was a new car then, and yours isnt, but these things happen...

Good luck...

Been cold out, have no place local to work on it, been busy with work, and just havent felt like doing things lately.

Dan, come on, at least check the damn fluid in the thing! Do I have to come over and get you motivated on that too? And I know how you all feel about not wanting to do anything lately, Dan and Chelly know why.:caution

Thanks Daniel - I actually looked into the ATF for the PS pump.

I'd really like to do that - flush with a change.

Tiff - interesting you said that about your 2k2 - I've suspected a leak for over a year now, but they say nothing.  Mine gives off a whine from time to time.

Ford's front ends are notorious though - pay attention to the Exploders and Tauruses...they whine all the time.
