obviously it wasn't a big enough issue to keep my from buying the car, but it's a question that's always bugged me. There is no tachometer, just a couple "up" and "down" shift lights. i'm not even sure the downshift light works because you'd stall it before it would even come on!

i've always thought this was a serious design deficiency. Out of curiosity i checked some of the 08 foci on the dealer lot a few weeks ago and even the automatic models have a tach.

so what gives? why doesn't the 07 have one?

Ford does some pretty whacky things and I think this is just one of them?

No tach on my '06 either.

For performance, shift at ~35, ~55, and ~80.

For economy, follow the shift light.

If you want a tach for free...

-Turn off the car all the way, remove the key.
-Hold the TRIP RESET button (on the gauge cluster) for 10 sec.
-Insert the key and start the car.
-The gauges will go haywire. Release the TRIP RESET button.
-Press and release the TRIP RESET button and the odometer will change modes, change it until you have a "mini tach". It should read like 500-600 at idle.
-Shift at ~6500 for performance.
