Those were popular when I was in high school & shortly thereafter. They were super inexpensive - maybe around $12-1400 new for the coupe. I was never actually in one. I was too busy cruising my lavender '52 Merc, with 3 deuces, a cam, 3sp Hurst floor shift, dropped maybe 3-4" with bubble skirts.
BTW, if you know what bubble skirts are, you're really an oldie.

Mr.V you are an oldie too ( but a goodie) That Merc was a flat head if my memory still works. I knw someone who re did one in the late 60's and used NOS. It was unbelieveable... and reall cool too.
The Metropolitan was built in England by Austin for Nash. I think Alcoa owned them at that time before it became American Motors... ah yes the Kenosha Caddy... Rambler...If you owned one...You deserved it and all the problems associated with it.
It was the American version of a French car... Not too friendly but had a certain
...How do you say it? panash...< best Frenh accent, please...

so did you win?...what happened?...*remembers a song...."whlie riding in my cadilac...what to my surprise....a little nash rambler was folowing me about one third my size....the guy must have wanted to pass me by cause he kept on tooting his horn....BEEP BEEP...BEEP BEEP....his horn went Beep beep beep..."
Talxs.... Did I win???? ha ha ha ha.... of course I would win. The Nash Metropolitan has a 0 to 58 MPH ( top speed of 58 ) of 17 or 19 seconds. It handled like a wet sponge and was always in need of repair. When an owner would advertise to sell the thing they would say "only 5000 miles on the road." cause the other 7000 it had to be towed. But savy buyers would know it had 12,000 miles including the towing.
But they were cute and cheap, so they initially sold. But as in most cases, their reputation caught up with them.
I chose this car to spoof because I remember ( while in the service ) in the late 60's Car and Driver did an article on " The year a Nash Metropolitan won the Can-Am." It was a great article and I wish I could read it again.
Well, so much for my trip down memory lane...Thanks for adding to my fun.

A guy pulled through my Shell station about a week ago with one on a trailer that he had just bought.
I asked him how much- He got it for $400. Probably from the original owner. It looked cherry except for the paint and some of the trim, and he said it still ran too.
$400 Nash, $500 Small block, $1000 paint job, $600 of fur for the interior, $400 rims/tires = 1 sweet cruiser for <$3k

Nothing like a Deuce Coupe with lakes pipes and moon discs, flat black paint, 3" chopped top, and of course, little moon eyes in the bottom front corner of each door...

I love 50's/60's kustoms. I wish I still had my '53 Studebaker. I wanted to lower it down, flat black it and give it the "salt flats" treatment, furry interior, etc.
