i have an associates degree in audio engineering. really that means recording studio and music gear. but there's alot of overlap if you want another voice in the discussion.

I had a 95 model Sony Tuner/receiver that recently kicked the bucket. I had some 60W book shelf speakers that went with it and work fine.
I picked up a sony 6.1 90wx6 tuner/receiver and when I hook the speakers up to it I have to have the volume at about 1/2 before the radio plays through them and have it on max to hear the TV input through it at a decent low level. Any thoughts at to what is going on. I really don't have the 3 bills for a satelite 6.1 speaker setup right now. And I already returned the original receiver thinking I got one bad out of the box. Both new receivers did this.
Am I stuck with gettign new speakers or is there somthing I am missing or did wrong. Any thoughts???
The new Receiver I beleve is 8 oms and I know it is 20hz - 20khz
The speakers are 8 oms and not sure about the hz.
and if you know how to fix these I somewhat have the symptoms but when I replace a blown fuze I got a 3(or so) inch flame/spark from the new fuse. The thing will still turn on and work without the fuse in it. It will just randomly decide, when turned off, to pulse bass through the speakers while blinking the seround button light.
With the new receiver check and see "mode" it is in. 3- stereo, Dolby, stereo, etc. if it is in the one that requires a center channel most of your voice sound could be going to the center channel. Try the other "modes" and this should re-direct the sound to your front channel speakers.
the only thing i can think of (considering what you've already tried) is that the reciever is 90w into six channels and when you put it in stereo mode it's still only using 15w for each channel... were as your old stereo reciever, if i understand correctly, had only two channels for the 90w so that would be 45 perside.
it makes sense that dissableing the other channels wouldn't sum the wattage of the amp into the remaining two cause if you had a full array of speakers, and then set it to stereo mode it would still use the same wattage for the speakers. asuming they were the same speakers and it might overpower them if they were little or something.
i'm rambling but i think you know what i mean.

I'd venture at least a guess that says the reciever is a 540W total system or even more considering it has Dolby Digital capability. 6 speakers and at least a +1 for the subwoofer, and unless it cost a dollar it wouldn't be that low powered.
I'd say to check a few things, as I can't imagine why it would be doing this. First I'd check the connections, I know that my pioneer had to have them in just the right way or else they kind of came in and out all on their own. Try hooking one up to the center channel like I said, if you don't hear anything, then I'd say it's more likely a cause for the reciever being faulty, as the center channel should give you at least something consistent all of the time. All of my settings give me some sort of center channel volume, stereo gives me the three front speakers, dolby gives me dialogue only in the center, and all-5 gives each speaker equal amounts of the signal. I've plugged speakers from a $20 all-in-one unit into my reciever and still gotten something out of them. And what was this about fuses popping? Seems to me that isn't normal.
I would also say this, make sure the TV is plugged into the dedicated TV signal channel, I know that my TV is usually quieter than my DVD player which is quieter than my PS2. So I have to be careful about volume for each thing. I adjust the TV volume to something reasonable, and the reciever has a setting for adjusting the input amplification usually.
This is the 2nd receiver. I already returned the original thinking I got a bad one out of the box.
I called Sony and they were about useless but told me I need speakers at least 90W. Is it as simple as that? I thought that lower wattage speakers would be really loud or something to that affect if.
Could my problem be as simple as getting new higher wattage speakers. And the receiver is 90W per chanel times 6 chanels, not 90W total.

IIRC, its lower wattage depending on what the ohms are... for instance, the Bose system I had in my car was 1ohm, 15 watts per channel (each channel had its own amp, making 4 amps total), and it actually sounded pretty good and was loud and fairly crisp, despite the problems I had with the head unit.
Now, the question is, can your current speakers handle 90W?? I think the dude on the phone was basically trying to make you buy new speakers, thus waste your money. Its not in the components itself, its more of either settings or connections IMO.

I just ordered a set of KLM 2.1 100watt per chanel speekers. $20 after I got $30 off for opening a credit card with Amizon (don't worry. It will get paid off and cancled within 2 months)
